GOP votes to allow dumping of mining debris in streams
Been watching with nothing short of despair as daily the news from the US rolls in re: Trump's policies.
I struggle to understand how a lot of these policies can be justified even to a sympathetic ear.
Case in point: House Republicans Vote to End Rule Stopping Coal Mining Debris From Being Dumped in Streams
Time
"Moving to dismantle former President Barack Obama's legacy on the environment and other issues, House Republicans approved a measure Wednesday that scuttles a regulation aimed at preventing coal mining debris from being dumped into nearby streams."
How is it that anyone can think that it is good for mining run-off and debris to end up in rivers and streams? I genuinely want to understand the thought process that decides, "yes, this is a good idea".
It surely can't be the case that the GOP sit in a room rubbing their hand together and explicitly plot environmental destruction in a cartoon manner. They must have some rationalisation for these policies. or am I being too idealistic?
I invite anyone to attempt to justify this

Re: GOP votes to allow dumping of mining debris in streams
Yes I understand that the real motivation is money, but are they that blatant?
Are their policy documents stating "screw the environment, let's cash in" or is there some kind of argument that dumping this crap in the rivers is actually harmless?

Re: GOP votes to allow dumping of mining debris in streams
I don't share your optimism.
Corporations have shown utter disregard for the environment unless forced to do otherwise through legislation.
A struggling industry like coal will do all it can to improve its profit margins. If that means cheap, unregulated disposal of waste, so be it.

Re: This is great.
Remember when Trump said he wasn't going to take a salary? He just accepted his second paycheck.
Remember when he said Mexico was going to pay for the wall? He asked Congress to appropriate the $25 billion of taxpayer money to cover costs.
Remember when he said he wasn't going to go on vacation or play golf? 5 of the last 7 weekends he went on vacation and played golf, costing taxpayers $11.1 million.
Remember when he said he wasn't going to cut social security and Medicare? The Republican bill does just this.
Remember when he said that nobody on his campaign had any communications with the Russian government? 7 of his people have now admitted they spoke and/or met with Russian officials, after they lied and got caught.
Remember when he said he was going to divest from his businesses? He changed his mind.
Remember when he said he was going to release his tax returns? He changed his mind.
Remember when he said he was going to drain the swamp of Washington insiders? His cabinet is filled with lobbyists, oil and Wall Street executives.
Remember when he said would defeat ISIS in 30 days? He doesn't have a plan. But his administration just mistakenly bombed a mosque in Syria killing 57 innocent people who were in the act of peacefully praying instead of the intended target. Not to mention the botched raid that killed a serviceman and little children he ordered and didn't even have the respect to disrupt his dinner to oversee.
Remember when he said that the Obamacare replacement would cover more people at lower cost? The AHCA will cover fewer people at a higher cost.

of course, nobody tries to tweak cars to eliminate CO2
I don't know about the US, but in the UK and Ireland cars are marketed on their CO2 emmisions.
Measured in g/km cars are liable for less vehicle duty the lower the CO2 emssions.
manufacturers are now marketing this as a feature, better fuel economy, clever engine management systems, even complex exhaust systems all go to reduce CO2 emissions.

Re: Reality has a liberal bias...
So you tweak an engine to run more efficiently, thereby reducing co2 emissions.
New cars here often have stop-start technology. i.e. when you're stopped at traffic lights or in a jam, the engine cuts out, and restarts when you take your foot off the brake pedal.
At other times the engines use less cylinders when running slowly. All to reduce emissions.

The man's a moron. A bonafide idiot. There's no strategy or thought involved here.
Something has to be done about him. Unfortunately your politicians don't seem to have any interest in saving your country from this fuckwit.

Trump will personally save up to $15m under tax bill, analysis finds
"Jared Kushner will save up to $12m, while five other members of Trump’s inner circle will also see benefits worth millions of dollars"
It seems a last minute bill was added to provide massive benefits to real estate firms, notably a loophole that trump personally benefits from with his golf courses.
can any Trump supporter please explain how this is defensible? anyone?

Re: Trump's Accusations About Immigrants Wrong
Immigration - Wikipedia
quote:
Research suggests that immigration has positive effects on native workers' health. As immigration rises, native workers are pushed into less demanding jobs, which improves native workers' health outcomes....
A survey of leading economists shows a consensus behind the view that high-skilled immigration makes the average American better off.[70] A survey of the same economists also shows strong support behind the notion that low-skilled immigration makes the average American better off
