Re: Rolled?
Hi Jon
JohnF writes:
It's good our soldiers are still alive. We don't owe the 10,000 Kurds who died for us anything, they're just brown people. Brown people are just cannon fodder. Their lives don't count.
If I understand our mission was to remove iss from the area.
When did we take the mission of solving the war that has been going on between the kurds and turkey since 1984?
Turkey wants their border to be safe and have a 20 mile wide safe zone in which settlements would be created for the millions of Syrians that are living in Turkey now.
We cannot control our own border so there is no way we could secure the Turkish border for them.
Turkey feels threatened by the (YPG), the military wing of the Syrian Kurdish Democratic Union Party (PYD).
They insist the YPG is an extension of the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) which has fought for Kurdish autonomy in Turkey since 1984. The (PKK) is designated as a terrorist group by the US and EU.
I would imagine the PYD has been negotiated with by Turkey and could not reach an agreement as to the 20 mile deep safe zone in Syria to resettle the 2+ million Syrians back in their own country, so the war goes on, just like it has for the past 35 years.
Since I do not have the facts I can not choose a position. The only thing I can say is it is a local problem and they should work out their own future. It is not for us to force our will on others when we are so divided in our relations with one another.

Hi Dr
DrJones writes:
ISIS hasn't been removed from the area. There are ~15000 prisoners (fighters/ sympathizers) being held by the Kurds in camps. Do you think the Kurds are going to continue to hold onto them while also fighting off the Turks?
The Kurds have just spent a lot of time, energy and lives putting those iss fighters in prison. Why would they turn them loose? The Turks are to be responsible for those prisoners so why not work with the Turks like they did with the US?
Maybe they can't do that as they have had a running war with Turkey for the past 35+ years. They need to solve their problems. We can not solve their problems for them.

The Kurds took on the responsibility for eliminating ISIS from the area. They were our allies. Until Trump fucked them over.
I gather you would rather be at war with Turkey. Which would ask Nato to come to it's support placing us at war with Nato. But we are members of Nato that has we are committed to defend in time of an attack.
What would be your decision is such a case?
Would you go to war with Turkey and Nato?
Turkey determined it was in their best interest to create a buffer zone between Turkey and Syria in which to settle the millions of Syrians refugees that are now in Turkey.

It's hard to recruit allies when you are willing to abandon them in order to save your own troops. In case you forgot, the US used to consider itself courageous. I guess that has changed with this new president.
So you vote we go to war with Turkey and the rest of Nato.
All the Nato members are pledged to come to the defense of any member that is attacked.
How would you like to be in the position of making the decision that had to be made?
It is easy to sit on the sidelines and second guess the decision.
Options:
Go to war with Nato members.
OR
Allow Turkey to finish creating the safe zone buffer in Northern Syria.
What is your choice?

Re: Rolled?
Hi Taq
Taq writes:
The moment we took them on as allies. It saddens me that this has to be explained to you.
How about explaining to me when we ceased being allies of Turkey who we are committed to defend.
Taq writes:
Turkey has wanted to wipe out the Kurds for a long time. This isn't about a safe zone. This is about attacking the Kurds. If they want a safe zone, then they should build one in their own country.
Why should they build a safe zone in Turkey to build settlements in which to house 2 million+ Syrians that are refugees in Turkey?
If they did that they would have to make them citizens of Turkey. So they want to build the settlements in Syria which they are citizens.
Taq writes:
It seems that you also forgot that the US used to be a leader in the world.
No I have not forgotten that we used to be leaders in the world.
But in the last 50 years we have ceased to be leaders and become a bully that has been trying to force our views on other countries.
Thus we have been in endless wars since the Korean conflict, and have not won one of them.
It seems we have tried to become the old Roman Empire or Babylonian Empire. It did not work out too well for them as neither exist today.
God Bless.

Re: Rolled?
Hi Dr
DrJones writes:
cause they need the manpower to fight the Turks/evacuate their own people.
Let me think about this. The Kurds have been guarding these captured prisoners for many months and maybe even years for some.
They are going to release them and hand them a AK47, and ammunition and say come fight with us?
Now that really sounds like a great deal for the ISS fighters.
DrJones writes:
but you can stand by and let them get slaughtered after they fought for you. So brave, so honorable.
I know the turks and kurds have been killing each other for the last 40+ years and possibly all the way back for 3,000 years. They just took breaks now and then.
So it was either leave them to resume their fighting or go to war against Nato.
Do you have a better solution?
God Bless

They could get together and make peace but that would mean abandoning a family feud. Not a chance

until the point where removing them doesn't inevitably lead to genocide. In the words of a great man "You broke it, you bought it".
ISIS was in Syria running roughshod over the inhabitants. The U.S. went in to stop ISIS. The Kurds were fighting the ISIS fighters before we got there. So they did not fight and die for our benefit but for their own survival. We helped them not them helping us.
So what did we break?
How many American soldiers would you suggest that we should put at risk in a civil war between Turkey and the Kurds? How many should be sacrificed to the war Gods?
The Kurds have been fighting with Turkey for 40+ years why should we fight that war?
We are bound by treaty to defend Turkey.
