Re: We All Get Snappy At Times
Faith may feel as if you don't respect her belief,
There would be a reason for that. I don't.
her intelligence,
That one is more problematic. The girl has some mental muscle. Unfortunately it seems mostly wrapped around her errant evil book leaving little capacity left to dispassionately assess or care for the realities of the universe and of the human condition.
nor her right to believe..irrational though it may seem to you.
Please, don't anyone ever get me wrong on this score. Ones right to their beliefs is nigh on sacred with me. I also happen to believe in all peoples' rights to criticize and belittle the more inane/downright crazy beliefs that some insist are real.
That doesn't mean I deny anyone any right to believe as their minds bend them. But it also doesn't mean I must, or will, suffer fools in silence.
Keep thinking of Faith as a gentle soul, and you may yet be the exorcist that God sent.
That would be something, wouldn't it. To be able to rescue, by sheer force of my rhetoric, both M'lady Faith and yourself from the demons of religious evil, religious thought. I could be the great liberator of those whose minds have been entrapped by religion. I could change the face of society. I could RULE THE WORLD!
Probably not.

Re: experience with demon-possessed man
On the other hand, irrationality is useful for what exactly?
Isn't that used to prove all those things that never happened done by those who never existed?
Pretty effective.

Re: A Philosophical Rabbit Trail
I have ten days to recover from my eye operation and have nothing but time.
Maybe I was not paying attention. Did not hear about this.
Nothing too serious I hope. You got any ocular ninja proteins?
Here have some.

Here you go world. Behold the very reasons religions are poison.
A man is searching for answers only his own conscience can fulfill.
And the intolerant religionist's advice to that searching soul is this:
Stand trial in your church for your questions of conscience. If they should find what they consider to be error in your questioning (as they should with ANY man of just conscience and principle) then, so says the totalitarian religionist, they should threaten you, kick you in the ass and out the door.
My advice would be different:
Do, indeed, seek to challenge your church. If they should threaten you with any kind of censure then you should leave on your own accord. Leave that church behind. They are not worthy of your intellect.
Continue searching. Continue reading. Continue exploring, questioning, arguing with yourself and others until you find the home you seek or die trying.

Re: Demons and delusions
There is another scenario that could be proposed. Though dealing with impetuous youth we must remember these youth were imbedded in a strong religious cult. We already know how twisted in logic religious minds can get.
The one perpetrator of this hoax, seeing his friends’ acceptance and deepening faith, is convinced, well after his show, that his subterfuge was a theater put on by god. He might reason god wanted, indeed, induced him into the hoax using his youthful impulses, and that to admit to such might undermine the fabric of faith in his friends and, thus, the will of god. All these years later, though he knows he was never possessed by any demon, he may be ever convinced that he had been possessed by a rather mischievous musing of the holy spirit and feels compelled to hold his secret.

Re: Demons and delusions
If that is your criteria, likely 30% of protestant churches fall under your cult definition.
Phat, com'on. You know that's 100%.
It's cults all the way down.

Re: Demons and delusions
It was a demon-possessed young man Phat saw.
Yes. Of course it was, M'Love. How foolish of me. What was I thinking!

You managed to save a good part of it, so, thank you.
I hope this starts a fight.

Re: Im a lover not a fighter
Seems we are now merely regurgitating old arguments that we never either settle or concede.
But if we try hard there could be a good fight.
