It appears that the Hofeller drives may provide a smoking gun that the Republicans' redistricting of North Carolina was, indeed, racially motivated and partisan gerrymandering.
The advocacy group Common Cause said in court documents submitted in Raleigh on Thursday that the Hofeller files include new evidence showing how North Carolina Republicans misled a federal court to prolong the life of their map of state legislative districts, which had been ruled unconstitutional.
The Republicans told the federal court hearing the map case that they would not be able to draw new legislative districts and hold public hearings on them in time for a proposed special election in late 2017 or early 2018. In fact, Common Cause said, Mr. Hofeller’s files show that almost all the work had already been done.
The legislators told the court that racial data on voters “was not even loaded into the computer used by the map drawer,†ensuring that the newly drawn district boundaries would not be based on race. But every proposed district map found on Mr. Hofeller’s hard drives had been scored for the racial makeup of the district.
'Course, now that they have been caught with their pants down, Republicans are doing what Republicans do best: screaming! They are now claiming that Hofeller's daughter acquired her fathers records illegally and making threats. Ms. Hofeller is underred.
If this was a witch hunt, it found a lot of witches. -- David Cole, writing about the Mueller investigation.
Trump's success in reaching a deal with Mexico and forestalling tarrifs (at least for now) isn't getting much play on the right. Steve M has an explanation.
(Lots more examples of burying at the link).
quote: The Mexico deal is only the #12 story on the FoxNews.com front page, well below these stories:
And even then, the headline for the Fox story about Mexico is "CNN Panel Has Different Take on Trump’s Mexico Deal."
Trump thinks he can sell this deal as a success, but the right-wing media just can't handle success. The conservative audience is so addicted to rage that front pages have to be incessantly focused on enemies -- Democrats, Muslims, the "liberal media," the "politically correct," and of course the people behind the Russiagate "witch hunt" (see the Lucianne front page).
This may be why Republicans couldn't successfully campaign on the economy in 2018. Polls show that Americans think the economy is good (although many Americans don't feel they're personally benefiting from the apparent prosperity). But Republicans have lost the ability to feel good about good news. Even if they think happy economic days are here again, what good is that to them? Somebody needs to suffer! Even liberals benefit from a good economy!
They can fear their enemies. They can feel contempt for their enemies. They don't seem to have any other emotions anymore.
ABE There are now reports that the deal "consists largely of actions that Mexico had already promised to take in prior discussions with the United States over the past several months." No doubt more to come.
When I heard yesterday about Mexico stopping caravans at their southern border because of Trump's threat of a tariff, I was very excited and thought of posting about it here. But I didn't because I heard it on the radio, didn't expect to be able to find published confirmation, and didn't want to go through another battle at EvC. The whole story wasn't out yet though. But it is great news that Trump's deal is working. And the amazing thing to me is that anybody here knows about it and calls it a success.
This was all agreed to months ago. Little donnie did nothing this week except politicize and desecrate the Normandy Invasion ceremonies.
quote:The deal to avert tariffs that President Trump announced with great fanfare on Friday night consists largely of actions that Mexico had already promised to take in prior discussions with the United States over the past several months, according to officials from both countries who are familiar with the negotiations. Friday’s joint declaration says Mexico agreed to the “deployment of its National Guard throughout Mexico, giving priority to its southern border.†But the Mexican government had already pledged to do that in March during secret talks in Miami between Kirstjen Nielsen, then the secretary of homeland security, and Olga Sanchez, the Mexican secretary of the interior, the officials said. The centerpiece of Mr. Trump’s deal was an expansion of a program to allow asylum-seekers to remain in Mexico while their legal cases proceed. But that arrangement was reached in December in a pair of painstakingly negotiated diplomatic notes that the two countries exchanged. Ms. Nielsen announced the Migrant Protection Protocols during a hearing of the House Judiciary Committee five days before Christmas.
The agreement didn't go in force so much earlier. If it had, and Mexico started cheating so immediately, the obvious tactic is to announce that and use it as leverage against them. Trump would be ecstatic doing that.
So, it seems like a good agreement so far. But the song and dance about tense negotiations and threats of tariffs damaged the economy and pissed off a lot of people, including the Republican moneybags. A very poor tactic.
Mexico IS going to stop the caravans, and there will be no tariffs as long as they do.
it doesn't matter if they stop the caravans or not, any tariffs will scuttle the new NAFTA deal which has yet to be ratified.
It's not enough to bash in heads, you've got to bash in minds soon I discovered that this rock thing was true Jerry Lee Lewis was the devil Jesus was an architect previous to his career as a prophet All of a sudden i found myself in love with the world And so there was only one thing I could do Was ding a ding dang my dang along ling long - Jesus Built my Hotrod Ministry Live every week like it's Shark Week! - Tracey Jordan Just a monkey in a long line of kings. - Matthew Good If "elitist" just means "not the dumbest motherfucker in the room", I'll be an elitist! - Get Your War On *not an actual doctor
Of course it matters if they stop the caravans, since that is what we want above all, cessation of the floods of illegal immigrants over our border, and as I understand it that WILL stop the tariffs Trump threatened against Mexico so that should make everybody happy.
I'm saying donny's threat of tariffs was stupid. If he had imposed the threatened tariffs Mexico's government would not ratify the new NAFTA deal. All he did was cause a blip in the stock market, harming american companies and investors.
Looks to me llke he knew what he was doing and that Mexico would stop the flood of illegal immigrants because of the threat of the tariff. \
However, any action to stop the caravans is late coming and up to this point it has looked **** Trump has backed down or his policies have failed, so although I'm happy IF this is what it sounds **** and IF it continues, part of me is skeptical and cynical about it. I can hope up to a point, but I've been getting used to disappointment. We'll see where it goes.
