Dunno about that. I find it easy to not offend people. I’ve learnt that if I get on a subject that people will be offended by they give little tells in their manner and expression. That makes me think: I better drop this. I used to think that saying what I wanted to say was being honest and the best way to be. Then I learnt that often people have no interest in my pet topics and stopped going on. I and everyone has been a lot happier since.

Hi Faith, I hope you are well. I think that rather than totalitarianism it is more that the current societal norms do not match and socially sanction yours. That’s always been the case when one is out of step with the mainstream. Did you know that some episodes of the American show ‘Friends’ are now considered inappropriate? When I watched them in the 90’s I laughed along with everyone when Ross was being poked fun at for his wife running off with another woman: comedy gold! My 18 yr old Nephew told me it was outdated and insensitive. I think you are conflating totalitarianism with the normative social values not matching your own anymore: my nephew thinks I’m his version of the ‘racist uncle’ trope. Time makes fools of us all.

It it has always been the case that this is true. The difference is now your particular views are no longer the dominant views. You are experiencing what (for example) a gay man or woman experienced in previous generations (in terms of social sanctions for not towing the cultural line). This is bad for you now. But it’s always bad for someone: it used to be people unlike you, now it is people like you. Society moves on: I’m my nephews ‘bigoted uncle’ because I laugh at Ross heavy episodes of Friends.
