Re: Who is "the Government"
Unless there is some evidence that there is a reason to keep god there is no problem throwing god away. But often silly things become comfortable to have around, like those worn out jeans or the raggedy chair that just feels right or the carnival glassware the kids won decades ago. If that's the case then sure, keep god on the shelf.

But only humans can feed the hungry, comfort the sorrowful, clothe the naked, protect the helpless, cure the sick or shelter the homeless.

Re: Theft Affects Labor At The Bottom Line

And the fact remains that they are breaking a consensual rule, whether they can justify breaking it or not.

I haven't said anything about justifying theft. I'm suggesting that you try to understand it. You'll never solve the problem by dehumanizing the thieves.

Or maybe you really don't want to solve the problem. Maybe you'd rather try to preserve the myth of "the Fall".

Phat writes:

Don't think for a minute that they steal with Gods blessing.

You should think about it, for a lot longer than a minute.

Phat writes:

And that should be on the individual conscience...never only mandated by the government.

As I have said, it was mandated by Jesus. You are mandated to be willing.

Phat writes:

If government is to mandate societal giving, they need to also mandate punishment for theft of any kind.

Non sequitur. If the churches were doing what they're supposed to do for the poor, the government wouldn't have to help them at all. And if somebody was doing enough for the poor, there would be a lot less crime.

I am mainly addressing ringo, who thinks that there is no god and thus secular government(note he is an atheist) in its purest form should do Gods work---no god needed.

You keep saying that and I keep correcting you. God is not doing His work. For practical purposes - e.g. helping the hungry and sick - there is no God. We have to do the work if it's going to get done. It would be nice if there was a God doing it for us but there isn't.

What does the Bible say?
The theme of who should do stuff, God or Man, is seen throughout the Bible. Starting in Genesis one clear example is the story of Joseph interpreting the Pharaoh's dream. In the story God sends a warning to the Pharaoh through dreams but it was left up to the Pharaoh and his people to grow and harvest and cure and store the foods that would be needed during the famine years.

God only pointed out the problem. It was left to man to do what was needed to solve the problem.

The story is often told even in the CCoI but few in the CCoI seem to honestly read or listen or understand what is actually written.

So What To Do?
Critics say that the human heart is the problem. ringo suggests we hand out spare change. You essentially agree, saying that it is the small daily actions that count. But when you work for Caesar, you don't let Caesars food fall to thieves....even hungry ones.

Just last night a guy came in with a backpack that I had seen before...and sure enough as we nonchalantly observed him, he would pick up items that would seemingly vanish as he rounded a corner. I prayed for god to touch him. When he got in line, (with a few things but not what we saw he had) he said one thing to me.

"I'm sorry.". I acted as if nothing had happened. Rang him up and wished him a good day. What else can a clerk do for a customer?(or a thief)

Re: So What To Do?
What is the Companies position? In the Bible the owner of the fields was told not to tell the folk to stop gleaning. It was common to not just allow gleaning but to encourage it when it was not profitable to harvest. Is that not similar to the decision Safeway seems to be making; that it is not profitable to try to stop pilfering?

Trying to say the "Human Heart" has any relevance is just word salad and more of the Carny spiel.

Instead of praying for god to touch him do something to better his day. Wish him a good day but also truly wish him well.

Edited by jar, : No reason given.

That actually seems spiritually inspired. Maybe there is hope for you yet.
