Don't be silly. It's about discernment in general. If you can't discern one, you can't discern the other.

I know I have spiritual discernment because I use it all the time.

In other words you don’t know and you weren’t using critical thinking at all.

quote:

I know the traditional view of Daniel is correct because I have spiritual discernment.

So we’re back to the fact that I have evidence - including the actual text - and you just have false boasting.

Re: Critical thinking/ spiritual discernment.
Modern scholars are generally not believers, are not born again, have zero spiritual discernment, do not love God or His word, and without the slightest reverence manhandle the Bible with their profane views.

Spiritual discernment is a guide to critical thinking, not a contradiction.

Throwing Out The Baby(in the manger) With The Bathwater
I have no intention of dismissing them. I realize that they come to the table with evidence. My only assertion is that their motives themselves need to become part of the evidence so that we can discern whether or not the argument is spiritual rather than simply bricks and mortar.

I wish you'd stop talking about "evidence" as if it were the exclusive possession of unbelievers. For pete's sake nobody can think at all about anything without recognizing the evidence for and against whatever proposition you are considering.

Again, copout. A "spiritual argument" is an excuse to dismiss actual evidence. If Darwin, Karl Marx and Hitler agree on something, the correct way to evaluate it is on the evidence, not the motivation.

Re: Critical thinking/ spiritual discernment.
All I can say in response is what Jesus said:
quote:
Luke 23:32-34

32 There were also two others, criminals, led with Him to be put to death. 33 And when they had come to the place called Calvary, there they crucified Him, and the criminals, one on the right hand and the other on the left. 34 Then Jesus said, "Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they do."
NKJV

Discernment is discernment. If you can't discern sin, you can't discern doctrine.

If in fact there is a spiritual plane apart from matter, physical objective evidence alone will never win any debate. Perhaps you can address that remote possibility.

Re: Critical thinking/ spiritual discernment.
One of the criminals recognized Him and therefore was saved. The other was not. Jesus was asking God to forgive those who crucified Him, however, all of them.

Re: Critical thinking/ spiritual discernment.
quote:

Were I to ask this question, I would seek to know the motives of the scholars and the motives of the revisionists if in fact there actually were revisionists. I am unconvinced at this point.

Scholars in general are trying to get at the truth. To understand the Bible in its historical context. But the first question you should ask is whether their views fit with the text - it isn’t hard to find a Bible and check ! That’s a lot better - and far more relevant than imputing motives to people you don’t know.

The revisionists on the other hand were likely trying to save a failed prophecy. Hardly uncommon behaviour amongst apologists even now.

quote:

For instance, it is claimed that the Gospel of John was written and revised and edited by redactors. The Christian Apologists never mention this claim, so either the Christian Apologists have an ulterior motive to direct and hide the full truth or (more likely in my mind) the scholars who claim to be unbiased and fully neutral are in fact tools of Satan.

That seems highly prejudiced and prejudicial. Apologists are inherently biased - and often less than honest. If you are looking for “tools of Satan” the latter seems a useful pointer.

Re: Critical thinking/ spiritual discernment.
That may be so but that passage nevertheless is about sin and not about doctrine. I don't have a problem with it myself since I really don't address people's sin. I figure it's none of my business unless there is some compelling reason to bring it up with the person him/herself, or it reaches criminal proportions which affect all of us.
