Re: A Small Book about Boosting Immunity
I hadn’t heard of Michael Savage before, so I looked him up.

I read he said this:

Now, the illness du jour is autism. You know what autism is? I'll tell you what autism is. In 99 percent of the cases, it's a brat who hasn't been told to cut the act out. That's what autism is. What do you mean they scream and they're silent? They don't have a father around to tell them, "Don't act like a moron. You'll get nowhere in life. Stop acting like a putz. Straighten up. Act like a man. Don't sit there crying and screaming, idiot.”

My stepson is autistic. I know a number of other autistic children and adults and have come to learn something of the condition.

Michael Savage is a piece of shit.

Could there be any greater conceit, than for someone to believe that the universe has to be simple enough for them to be able to understand it ?

Re: A Small Book about Boosting Immunity
I’m sorry, but no. Had he apologised properly, I might have some level of respect, but he came up with the same old bullshit about being taken out of context.

Autism is a genuine and serious, life-limiting condition. To dismiss it like he did makes him a shit, pure and simple.

Re: A Small Book about Boosting Immunity
Extract from his Wiki entry:

Autism

In July 2008, Savage said that the increasing rate of autism diagnoses was the result of "a racket" designed to get disability payments for "poorer families who have found a new way to be parasites on the government." He returned to the subject on his July 16, 2008, show with the following remarks:

“Now, the illness du jour is autism. Don't sit there crying and screaming, idiot."

In July 2008 the progressive pressure group Media Matters for America picketed the studios of WOR in New York, along with parents of autistic children. WOR issued a statement saying, "We regret any consternation that his remarks may have caused to our listeners." Also that day, the insurance company Aflac pulled its advertising, and the Supertalk Mississippi radio network dropped Savage's program, replacing it with The Dennis Miller Show. Later that evening, Savage devoted his entire three-hour program to the subject, taking calls from parents who took issue with his comments. On that show Savage stated that his remarks had been "ripped out of context" by "far left Stalinists" who want him off of the air. He appeared on Larry King Live with Glenn Beck as the substitute host for Larry King, and said that the real issue he was commenting on was the overdiagnosis of children due to pharmaceutical companies' drive to drug children for higher profits. On July 25, 2008, Autism United advocates gathered to announce that several advertisers, including RadioShack, Sears, The Home Depot, and DirectBuy, will discontinue their support for Savage's show.

Savage's syndicator, Talk Radio Network, responded by releasing a lengthy statement, along with a selection of 20 audio clips drawn from Savage's discussions of autism, to show that the comments were taken out of context.

Re: The Quinine Drugs Problematic Miracle Cure?
By the way these guys have HUGE audiences.

I don’t doubt that Faith.

I would say, in counterpoint, that over here, one of our most popular TV shows is Love Island; vastly more people regularly order take away crap rather than cook decent food; and celebrity gossip magazines outsell respectable literature by many orders of magnitude. Popularity is not a valid metric of quality.

Now that is a nice way to end the working week !

Really pleased to hear that Tangle - good luck for a full recovery.

As an aside, I wonder whether exposure to certain other forms of corona virus in the past may have led to a degree of immunity in some of us, which leads to corvid 19 manifesting itself mildly. In other words, what varieties of cold we’ve caught in the past.

I’m no virologist though. Thoughts from anyone who knows more than me ?

Yep. It transpires that Huxley underestimated the power of human stupidity - you don’t need soma to control the masses.

They could all just change their name to Dominic Cummings - they’d be alright then.

Is it me, or are Trump’s utterances in the past few weeks becoming not so much jaw-droppingly stupid, as actually indicative of a genuine mental illness ?

I know - and damn is it depressing just how many people believe him.

It does just seem to me though, that he is increasingly sounding as if he’s disconnecting from reality. I know that whatever he says appeals to his base, but it’s getting even more bizarre than usual.

Is anyone else wondering if the GOP is looking at the poll numbers, at COVID and at BLM and wondering if they’ve got time to push Pence on board, under cover of a “Trump mental breakdown brought on by stress and the evil press” ?

They believe everything he says so he can babble anything - it probably wouldn't even have to be words.

The whole populist right wing approach is devilishly ingenious. They can pile lie upon lie to their fundamentalist evangelical base, knowing that those people cannot allow themselves to accept that they have been taken in by a lie. Because the moment they accept that, they know that it will threaten the foundations of their absolutist religious belief system. If they’re wrong about Trump, maybe, just maybe, they could be wrong about YECism.
