Re: To Mask Or Not To Mask.
Nevada governor Thursday reuested (required?) that everyone wear something covering the face when leaving the house, a mask, a bandanna, anything. Homemade masks are becoming popular I understand, using patterns that can be found online, especially at You Tube, which I linked above to Percy.
Many of the grocery stores here are letting people in according to a certain predetermined number so that there are long lines forming outside. They have also painted yellow lines six feet apart to keep everyone at the prescribed social distance, both in the outside lines and in the lines at checkout, not sure where else.
As for spreading the virus through the air, I heard weeks ago that you don't even need to cough or sneeze to spread it, that merely breathing, talking etc, puts it into the air where it remains for something like three hours. This isn't talking about heavy droplets, but very fine mist.

Re: How can countries reopen?
Note to Faith: I had only heard this virus being labeled "coronavirus" until the medical people started using Covid-19. I have now seen increased violent attacks on people of asian descent because of the "china virus" label. Words matter: some Americans are so ignorant that many thought coronavirus was from the beer. At least it couldn't be used to justify racist attacks
I have no problem with that way of putting it but other ignorant people, speaking of ignorant people, or more likely malicious people, politically sick people, called Trump a racist for using it perfectly innocently. The Left is going to bury the country, just as Khruschev (sp?) once said he would. Just everybody stop with the PC namecalling at least while any one of us could get this virus and die.
I just realized this morning that Boris Johnson is only 55 and he's in ICU, may not die of course but he's a lot younger than I am, in fact he's only a few years older than my daughter and son in law and all my brother's kids. My brother and his wife and I are all in the high risk age group and we all have risk factors of one sort or another. I'd like to figure out how to spare him bringing me groceries and taking out the trash for me since I can't do it. His wife is making masks. I'm sure she'll give me one, maybe tomorrow which is my birthday, another big scary birthday.

Re: How can countries reopen?
By the way I hear the news reports about the Nevada counts every hour and I can never remember them, but I do know that in Washoe County where I live we have 31 Recovered. It's good to know that number becausew presumably the more of them we have the sooner we can reopen things and the more people will be available for various jobs without risk to others too.

Re: How can countries reopen?
Wishing me long life would have been neutral enough but I wonder why I suspect a hidden jab at me as you've worded it?
More realistic would be to wish me death by coronavirus and in my current mood I might wish it on myself, just hope it happens fast so I don't take up too much needed equipment.

As I recall, Trump said he HOPED things could open up by Easter, saying it would be a good day for it.
The stats people quote are not necessarily trustworthy. Do they clearly distinguish between, say, the virus and the flu for instance. And how do they compare with the statistics for the flu for that matter.

That site wants me to sign up to receive something from them. I'd rather not. Could you briefly summarize how these masks work?

Re: California
This wasn’t recognized because we were having a severe flu season, Smith said in an interview. Symptoms are very much like the flu. If you got a mild case of COVID, you didn’t really notice. You didn’t even go to the doctor. The doctor maybe didn’t even do it because they presumed it was the flu.
Eggzacklee.
So Faith it seems was right.
And the disease is wider spread than thought.
SOMEBODY SAID I'M RIGHT ABOUT SOMETHING????? At EvC??????

Re: California
We'll see how far back it goes when they are able to test enough people for antibodies. If my daughter's family all have antibodies it would go back to late November - early December. She and one grandson had another "cold" in January or February though so that might confuse things, we can't seem to remember exactly when. They were visiting me at the time for a ski trip. Another family they are friends with had something similar but I'm not sure when. And children in one school were sick at the same time in November to December. And my other grandson and their father were sick at that early time and not since too.

Hydroxychloroquine
Does anyone know if Hydroxychloroquine is being used with any cases of the virus? I heard one passing reference earlier today but nothing else.

Re: Hydroxychloroquine
Thank you.
I heard some time ago that Cuomo had recommended its use in New York hospitals but I haven't heard anything about whether or not it has actually been used.

Re: Hydroxychloroquine
Sorry, there are plenty of medical people who have used it for decades for malaria and know it is safe. The cases where it has been used on COVID-19 have been overwhelmingly positive. Of course it could have adverse effects on some people but it's worked just fine for decades for malaria and all this panic about using it now is really just an excuse to complain about Trump who found out about it and promoted it. It's like you'd all rather let people die than use a drug Trump happened to hear about that has been used for half a century and has shown to work for this virus when tried.

Re: Hydroxychloroquine
It's all anecdotal, dear jar, I hear it on the radio from the people who have been given the med and recovered rather dramatically after being at death's door. If you'd rather just watch people succumb to respiratory failure without trying the drug which has been anecdotally reported to work for many people, after half a century of safe use for malaria, I guess you can enjoy the spectacle.

Yeah, and what *I* got is that you couldn't care less if it might save lives, you just want to win the debate.

Re: Hydroxychloroquine
LET ME REPEAT THIS CRUCIAL POINT: HYDROXYCHLOROQUINE HAS BEEN USED FOR A LONG LONG TIME FOR MALARIA. A FRIEND OF MINE HAS FAMILY MEMBERS WHO TOOK IT WHEN THEY WENT TO MALARIA-RIDDEN COUNTRIES. SHE IS ALSO PART OF A MEDICAL COMMUNITY THAT HAS USED IT FOR YEARS. NONE OF THIS PROVES ITS EFFICACY FOR THE CURRENT VIRUS, ALL THAT DEPENDS ON THE ANECDOTAL EVIDENCE THAT IT HAS BEEN VERY EFFECTIVE. BUT YOU CAN'T SAY IT HASN'T BEEN TESTED IN WAYS THAT MATTER WHEN IT HAS A LONG HISTORY OF USE FOR MALARIA. IT OUGHT TO BE CONSIDERED WORTH A TRY FOR PEOPLE WITH SEVERE CASES OF THE VIRUS.
