So, seven days at sea and am now in NY. All crew had masks; maybe 10% of the passengers. Everybody that got onto the ship had to be triple vaxxed and third party tested. But there were six known cases on the ship.
Just walked through the street markets of Hell's Kitchen, No masks to speak of.

I'm now in Washington DC - COVID is no more here. The only evidence of it is in the archaeology of signage - stickers reminding of distances between people that people no longer honour, elevators for four that now again have ten, mask symbols that people don't see anymore.
Like New York, DC is returning to normal - the fountains around the memorials have been switched back on. The virus is still out there but the vaccines do look as though they've saved us. Either way, we're living with it now.

You're so close to Toronto I hope you have a chance to make it there - it's a wonderful city. Don't miss CN Tower and Casa Loma.
We're in Toronto tomorrow but sadly only to fly home :-(
There's two sides to the Canadian Niagara, the beautiful Falls and the Parks behind them and the awful tourist crap in the town.
Anyway, fireworks tonight, then home tomorrow. Hopefully COVID free.
DC was lovely btw. Didn't make the Smithsonian so I have a reason to return. Sad to see that there's still evidence of the insurrection on the Capitol. But your institutions still stand.
Your country seems to be just re-awakening, things are a bit clunky and a bit disjointed but it's spring, new buds etc.
I wish y'all luck with it, you have a beautiful country.

btw, we stopped off at Gettysburg on the way to Niagara. (No masks requirement there either.)
It looked like a fairly close run battle, if Lee hadn't made a mistake, you'd still own slaves.

Home now, slight headache, croaky throat and drowsiness thought it might just be air travel but took a COVID test.
Positive!
Wife negative.
This could be interesting….

Brits have an unfair reputation for food - it originated after the second world war when we were still rationing food and and stuck.
These days you'll find the greatest selection of cuisines in the world here and more cookery shows than you've had hot dinners.
We found some great food in the US (mostly Italian) but we had to try very hard to find it. It's burgers and junk all the way down. And don't get me started on Denny's...

There did seem to be a solid basis for their reputation for boiling vegetables down to a purée.
Yes, that can happen, mostly in bad pubs these days as they tend to have amateur cooks but it's much less common than it was when our reputation was gained.

Sorry it was difficult finding good food in the US. I would have thought that in New York, Washington DC, Gettysburg and Niagara you would have easily found any cuisine you wanted, from mainstream American fair to Chinese (American version) to Thai to Indian to Italian (which you found) to Mediterranean style to Mexican to Greek to Vietnamese to sub shops to pizza parlors to bar/pub fare.
I agree, there's a restaurant of every nationality every other shopfront everywhere in the US. But so many of them were rubbish. Niagara was stand out awful. No doubt the locals know the good ones but we didn't find one - it's predominantly tourist fast food.
I guess it's the same everywhere, both New York and London have tens of thousands of restaurants of all types but there are only a small percentage that are actually any good. You just have to know.
btw in New York we found our best meal of the trip it was called Sicily from memory - lovely authentic Italian.

And I see you discovered Denny's, both an American shame and treasure. Breakfast there is pure gold, any other time kind of hit or miss. The over 70 crowd loves it and arrives around 4:30.
Ughh!

I'm pretty sure they wouldn't know what to do with a pan of water - as far as I could see all they did was fry stuff.

Feeling better today but not much energy to do anything. Still testing positive. So far seems exactly like a fairly moderate common cold.

Interesting phenomenon using lateral flow tests.
On Monday I had a strong red line appear very quickly and I felt pretty rubbish.
Thursday I'm feeling better and the line takes 30 minutes to appear and is quite faint.
Today it's so faint I can only see it if I really try.
Seems like it's analogue :-)

Well that was short-lived smugness.
I've now got bad back ache. I never get back ache.
At first I thought I must have pulled a muscle somehow but couldn't work out how, but then I find that it's a common late-stage Omicron COVID symptom.
It's the gift that keeps giving.

It's lower back pain, and it fits Omicron symptoms but if it persists, I'll off to get poked and prodded.
Feels a bit better today.
