I do have a positive impression of Whitmer. Phat writes: Just out of curiousity, whats the difference between a good conservative candidate and a conservative nut? Where do you rate Ted Cruz? Rand Paul? The conservative Kennedy? Any candidate of any political persuasion who stands upon consistent principles dedicated to the betterment of all citizens and the country in general is a good candidate. An example of poorly principled politicians are those engaged in efforts to make those unlikely to vote for them less likely to vote. Another example, this more explicit, was when Tennessee statehouse Republicans voted to expel two Democrats earlier this year. You can assess Cruz, Paul and Kennedy yourself according to these principles and arrive at your own conclusions. --Percy

hey Phat, fix your quoting. Theodoric didn't write this:

Notice I used the word "liberals" rather than naming anyone. The peanut gallery all fell from the same tree.

But she does not get much press coverage for that. I lay that at Biden's feet. One of his jobs was to build and grow the young pols in the party's pipeline. When was the last time he did any kind of mentor thing at a news conference or speech or publicly uttered "off the cuff" remark? The way Obama kept Biden involved, public and shining. If it is happening and others are being sponsored and groomed then we haven't seen it and it isn't working. In a pop culture 30-second soundbite presidential knife fight it is the "look", the visuals, the optics ... the perception of the personality, the perception of the beliefs ... that is key. For all her skills personal, professional, political, VP Kamala Harris is not, imho, a commanding enough presence to do soundbite battles nationally with the likes of DeSantis and Trump. She was not a leading light in the last campaign. Maybe she will blossom on her own campaign. Cory Booker? Elizabeth Warren? Gavin Newsom? Gretchen Whitmer? xongsmith would add AOC. Policy ok. Public personality is a bit too harsh, imho, and I don't see the general public taking to it. Edited by AZPaul3, . Edited by AZPaul3, . Stop Tzar Vladimir the Condemned!

You used it as a pejorative against an individual, that is the definition of a personal attack. You don't even lie well.

Whats with this "snowflake" stuff? If we get another weak administration in there who is afraid to support older folks and seeks, rather, to redistribute wealth, the gray panthers will awaken and become more of a unified voting block than the smartphone selfie generation has ever seen or had to contend with. Perhaps you could call us the snowflake coalition! The Boomers will still outvote the Gen Xers for at least fifteen more years.
Having the latest diversity supporting candidate will take a back seat to making sure that grandpa and grandma are taken care of. Besides...*this* old man is still working and wont sit at home sluffing off anytime soon. And yes, I realize that hardcore conservatives want to do away with social security. The less the country spends on that, the more the country will need to spend on homelessness and medicare.

So neither the Dems or GQP support seniors? The old folks are going to throw out Buden and vote in donnie, because the GQP wants to cut social security?

You've got a point. The problem with the Dems, however, is that they want to support too many groups and there is not enough money to go around. If they end up raising taxes, it wont help the situation.

Tax the upper incomes and institute a wealth tax beyond the real estate taxes we have now. You wont pay anymore, with your income. If it doesn't work, at least we won't have this horrid income division between the 1% and the rest of us. It'll feel better."I'm the Grim Reaper now, Mitch. Step aside." If they end up raising taxes, it wont help the situation. If tax increases are used to fund improvements in healthcare, housing and nutrition, how would we not be better off? Take just healthcare, for example. As Medicare spending has increased over time, lifespans have increased. That's what better healthcare will do. And here's a graph about Social Security's impact on lifespan showing that higher SS income leads to longer lifespans:
If we did the same for the general population the average quality of life would improve, and a happier, healthier population is also a more productive one. --Percy
