Re: Home
It turns out, time with friends is precious!
I was really pleased to get time with my 2 best pals on this trip in between family visits for both of us. We 3 shoot the same cameras Nikon D700s, and work with eggs and nymphs and our other 2 friends both live in the Pacific Northwest and shoot Canon.
I hope you have a blast and have a great time hitting balls as few times as possible!
A piece of unsolicited advice, get your friend to tell his best childhood stories.

Re: Home
AZ is a nice place to visit, but I certainly have no desire to live here. Suburban sprawl hell. My friends moved into an over 55 community in Maricopa. Lots of amenities, lots of local golf courses(he would golf ever day if he could), nice weather. Just not my cup of tea. We will come see them every year, but not going to sunbird it like they want.

What? What? Say that again, please.
Something that became more and more obvious over the course of our trip, just how much my hearing loss had increased. I had made an appointment to have my hearing tested and hearing aids adjusted a month before the trip but they couldn't get me in until after we returned. Last Tuesday I had my tests and not only has my hearing declined but my 8 year old hearing aids were barely amplifying sounds at all.
I ordered new hearing aids and they were fitted and tuned to my hearing loss on Saturday. What an amazing difference!!! The "brighter" sounds high pitched noises and "S" sounds were completely missing with my old ones and now annoyingly obvious. It will take a week or so for my brain to adjust to these new inputs, but I am not continuously asking people to repeat themselves or rewinding and watching things on the TV because I could not understand what was said the first time!
This is absolutely astonishing! A small accessory device will let me stream music, audiobooks, and phone conversations directly to my hearing aids. My old ones quit doing that a few years ago. The new ones would stream without the device with iphones, but not Andoids. I was happy that my old hearing aids could be tuned to my hearing tests, but it is far more precise now. I can hear birds again!

What brand? I have Phonak. I can bluetooth any audio source direct to my hearing aids. My old ones were about 7 years old when I replaced them last year. Huge difference.

My wife's are around that old and she's ready to replace them, so we could use brand/model info, too.

Mine are Philips Hearlink MNR T R. My last pair were $2600, this pair are $1600 + $259 for the Bluetooth device.

Re: What? What? Say that again, please.
Thanks for the info. My wife thinks her pair cost at least $6000 before insurance nine years ago, but we only had to pay $747.90, yes I have perfect recall, no Quicken isn't sitting in front of me. They had some fancy feature where it could put nearby voices in the foreground above background noise, enabling her to hear conversations in restaurants. We don't have insurance now.

Re: What? What? Say that again, please.
I have Phonak Audeo M70-RT. Love them. There is an app to make adjustments. No device is needed for Bluetooth. These are also rechargeable. I have only had one issue with not having batteries. Last Thanksgiving we went to Seattle for 4 days and I forgot my charger.
My previous ones were $4200, 8 years ago. I paid $3200 for these a year ago. Unfortunately, my insurance pays $0 for hearing aids. I guess that is what an HSA is for.

Re: What? What? Say that again, please.
I noticed during the pandemic that I couldn't hear the high-pitched ready tone from a digital thermometer.
My wife is tired of repeating herself; my primary doctor warns me that untreated hearing loss is associated with an earlier onset of dementia.
Yet I have procrastinated, reluctant to leave my cozy, acoustically insulated space ...

Re: What? What? Say that again, please.
There's a fun little experiment you can do, where you use a tone generating app on your phone that tests for how high you can go. Basically, it goes up and up slowly and the moment you can't hear it, you press stop, and it'll tell you where you're at.
That's not the fun bit though, the fun bit is doing breathing exercises, like deep, fast in and outs for a few minutes to fill your body with an abundance of oxygen and then do the test again. You'll hear higher notes than before!

Or I'll stroke out again, face plant, and hear no more.

Which app? I tried to find one at the iPhone app store, but no luck yet. I'll keep looking.

Re: What? What? Say that again, please.
Found an app. I found that my iPhone speakers, my AirPod headphones, my MacBook speakers and my home entertainment speakers perform differently at high frequencies. My home entertainments speakers seemed to have the best range and I could go up to 10,500 and honestly say I could hear it.
That seems pretty bad? When I look up hearing online it says that most people can hear 15,000.

I'm getting an evaluation, then almost certainly hearing aids, this summer. I expect to be shocked.
