Does this mean space is being 'created'

If space has an energy density (and mass properties), would this result in net energy and mass being created in the universe?

Ok my confusion.

My understanding (based on what I thought Cavediver had said, but obviously I misunderstood) was that space has inherent energy associated with it; given that energy has mass properties I somehow thought space had some underlying mass properties.
​
But apparently I totally misunderstood.
​
Makes sense as I was having a hard time meshing this conclusion with the first thermodynamic law. I figured I was missing something.
