And then I was overcome with an indescribable feeling of love. This rapture blindsided me, and lasted a few minutes, and it was a defining event in my life.
No doubt your did experience that. How did you decide that the prayer produced it, rather than some internal process triggered by seeing the fellow pray?
Religious folk need to realize that these experiences cut no ice with non-believers.

Re: Come to Jesus, Garlic Breath
Just because you have no evidence currently, doesn't mean it doesn't exist.
Sure, but it would be foolish to believe in something without evidence, for then you would be obliged to believe in anything you, or anyone else, happened to imagine.

Re: Come to Jesus, Garlic Breath
So if there is no evidence against it I should therefore believe in everything and anything?
No, no, of course not. That's the point.
The religious think that their beliefs should be respected, even though they cannot back them up with evidence. They would object as you sensibly did if one suggested that they believe in other unevidenced things. I was trying to point out the hypocrisy of that behaviour and that they are unjustifiably demanding special status for their beliefs.

Re: Science=study of empirical evidence
Until there is some empirical evidence for deities, the default position is what can be observed and studied. "Theology" is the study of a null set.
I agree. This point does matter.
At present, I have a great dislike for religion. My father is suffering from Parkinson's disease. The thought that he might perhaps have had some relief, had foolish superstition not blocked promising research, sickens me.
I would have no problem with people holding weird, unsupported beliefs, if only they would keep them to themselves.
