I think it's a good idea in principle.
I'm not enormously familiar with the current state of education in the UK (not having any kids) but I suspect that in practice there's little chance of it happening here. My impression is teaching in the UK is currently so focused on the existing curicculum as to leave no room for any significant new content.
Any Brits with school age kids could give you a better idea of the situation over here.
