Mormons

So essentially all literalists/fundamentalists, who have a book called the Bible as the center of their religions, are cultists. Correct?It just astounds be how vehemently other brands of fundy go after Mormons as Evil, Apostate, Sorry-Assed Sunsabitches. There was a "ministry" in the little town next to where I lived in Oklahoma whose entire "mission" was to expose Mormonism and rescue those who were not too deep in its clutches. Now I, personally, wouldn't want to bicycle around in a white shirt and tie, but hey - who are they hurting?

equals Christianity. Eastern religions do not extol Christ. Therefore, the two are mutually exclusive.

I think not. The way to salvation is elaborately dealt with in scripture. No book of mormon is necessary, no other book is necessary, "Seach the scriptures, for in them ye think ye have eternal life for they are they which testify of me" John 5:39, nothing was said about the book of mormon.

if you take a careful look at the RCC you'll find that Mary occupies the throne of grace, followed behind by a plethora of saints.

Crap.There is absolutely no reason to think that God did not reach out to a whole new group of people just as he did numerous times in the OT and through Jesus, just as he did through Mohammud.Their relationship is between them and God. If wrong, then it is still between them and God.After all, Christ did not say to worship him. When he was asked he said that the two Great Commandments are: "Love GOD, and to love others as you love yourself".Love GOD not Christ.

You realize that someone like me, an agnostic, takes that as: "If you mention our holy writings to them, they mention their holy writings, hence they are a cult. Oh, and by the way, I talk to imaginary people."Sorry to be offensive, but you have a really lame basis for segregating Mormans, as Jar is pointing out in a much more detailed way. I still say most Christian churches are a cult as much as Mormans, but then, you don't seem to be addressing the point that the definition of "cult" is relative to each person.

If there was a right answer, this is what it would look like in my very humble opinion. The label "cult" is often used to denigrate another religion for being just that, a religion. Kind of like a homeless person calling someone "trailer trash". Being agnostic myself I look at all religions equally. I wouldn't call them "cults" but rather religions. The only thing I would call a cult would be a group that didn't worship something supernatural. Perhaps a "cult of personality" would be more of what I envision. Anyway, I just wanted people to understand that other people hold their religious views as tightly as those in other religions and this shouldn't be ignored.

They are nice people. The only gripe I have with the Mormon Church is the amount of sway they have in the Idaho government. Something like 20-30% of the state Senate and House is mormon and some of the lawmaking reflects this. In fact, every other year statewide prohibition of alcohol goes through committee. It has never gone to the floor, but just the thought of it makes my stomach churn.
