This thread is intended to answer anyone's questions about Jesus...
Would Jesus have been in favour of torturing people to death if they worked on the Sabbath?

So Moses (and the OT God?) were wrong, then. Was Moses a false "prophet" perhaps, if prophet is the right word?

No. The stories all reflect the understandings of a given era.
I think "beliefs" is a slightly better word than "understandings".
You also need to understand that there is not one Old Testament God but many. The Bible is a book written by men and reflects the mores of their era.
I don't really need to understand either of those points. I know them.
I should've said "Moses's God", rather than "the OT God", so my fault if I was misleading.
But your last sentence is something any non-believer who's read the Bible would agree with, obviously.

Experiences?
gen writes:
I believe in the Bible because of what I have been taught and what I have experienced, but most of all because the Bible itself says it is true.
The Koran, itself, says it's true.
What were the experiences that backed up what you have been taught? What kind of experiences would confirm the belief that this universe was created by an entity who shows particular interest and favouritism towards one middle-eastern tribe?
Would you agree with me that human beings regularly invent false religions?

Sabbath stoning
gen writes:
Jesus was not in favour of killing people for 'working' on the Sabbath.
Thanks for the reply. Perhaps the confusion for non-Christians comes from being told that Jesus is God. Here, God orders someone to be tortured to death for breaking the Sabbath rules.
quote:
Numbers: 15:32 While the Israelites were in the desert, a man was found gathering wood on the Sabbath day. 33 Those who found him gathering wood brought him to Moses and Aaron and the whole assembly, 34 and they kept him in custody, because it was not clear what should be done to him. 35 Then the LORD said to Moses, "The man must die. The whole assembly must stone him outside the camp." 36 So the assembly took him outside the camp and stoned him to death, as the LORD commanded Moses.
So, Jesus isn't God, then?

That man was getting what he deserved, but Jesus has now died, so we can have the gift of God-eternal life.
So, Jesus having died, is it O.K. for me to collect firewood on a Sunday? Or should I get what the other man deserved, in your opinion, if I do this? I have done it in the past, so if I escape the stoning to death, will I be condemned to eternal damnation?

Favoured Tribe
gen writes:
God is not 'an entitly who shows particular interest and favouritism towards one middle-eastern tribe', He is the only God (see Exodus 20 3-6) and he has an interest in every human being, all 6billion of us, on this planet, as he has throughout the ages.
Well, you have to admit that he does seem to have chosen all his prophets from one tribe when there were people spread out over six continents. And when he comes to earth as his own son, guess which tribe he appears amongst.
Wouldn't it be a bit more convincing if He had sent his word to a number of different characters from different cultures all over the world? More practical, as well, because the natives of the Americas and Australia, for example, wouldn't have had to wait until the Europeans arrived to take over their land before they could have a chance to be saved.
