Re: Conservatism in Science
I agree with bluegenes that this is off-topic here.
But if you have any ideas how the thousands of different, independent committees all over the world just happen to be enforcing the exact same orthodoxy among all the scientists, I would be interested in seeing you start a new thread.
Edited by Chiroptera, : changed hundreds to thousands

Q: If science doesn't know where this comes from, then couldn't it be God's doing?
A: The only difference between that kind of thinking and the stereotype of the savage who thinks the Great White Hunter is a God because he doesn't know how the hunter's cigarette lighter works is that the savage has an excuse for his ignorance. -- jhuger

Re: Conservatism in Science
Someone further up the thread suggested that you should set up a topic on the subjects you've been discussing here, and I agree. Several people (myself included) have wandered off the fairies and Gods topic, and the author of the topic has made a justifiable complaint. Your first post on this thread might serve as a base for that topic (just a suggestion!).
Unless, of course, you're suggesting that studies of the fairies and gods should get scientific research funding. Perhaps, in a way, you are?
Sorry about that bluegenes. I got sidetracked.
Back to the topic.
We all have fairy tales we make up that give our lives meaning. We all derive meaning from something greater than ourselves - it is what gives us hope and courage to face what lies ahead. Whether that is a God or the Cosmos we look in awe and reverence and find our meaning there. It brings us joy and happiness and gives us a purpose. This awe and reverence is something to be embraced. Absolute truth is always something that is always out of our grasp -whenever we think we have found it we find ourselves chasing it around like a dog after his tail.

I've never thought I've found it, or had any hopes of doing so, except perhaps under the influence of excessive quantities of alcohol.

When we think we have found absolute truth we usually get oursevles in trouble. Followers of Jim Jones found it and sipped the nectar of objective truth but ended up mixing it with cyanide laced kool-aid. Heavens Gaters too found it and ended up lying like stiffs in pairs of black Nikes while waiting for the Mothership to arrive. Hitler thought he found it and the result was a eugenics program to sustain a master race by purging the genetically inferior.
Beware of those who claim to hold obective truth - it comes in various packages and forms and can often be disguised as rational. This disease is not limited to the religious. As history shows this claim of finding objective truth amidst our falible condition is usually dangerous to one's health.
There are various degrees of truth acceptance among the religious. The most dangerous are those who claim it is impossible for them to be wrong. Most of the sane don't go that far though and at least have one foot inside the confines of reality.
There is a term for those who claim they cannot be wrong - deluded fanatics. Among the rational the most dangerous are those who hold as absolute truth the idea that they retain genetic superiority and the value of an individual is found in his or her ability to reason and accept facts.
As far as my views on reality I remain largely agnostic on most issues people find of prime importance. People often construe my somewhat radical positions on current topics as advocating a particular stance when I am not. I try to simply be as objective as I can when addressing the issues at hand.
If someone were to ask me if I beleve in a 'creator-god' I would answer I simply don't know. Nor is it of major importance to me. I am here and alive. I have no control over what objective truth is. If someone asks me if I believe in a personal deity involved with the affairs of men I would answer in the negative. My speculation on the issue ends there.

If your goal is to ease suffering, Ma Theresa accomplished. She did not eradicate disease, sure, but she eradicated lonliness.
I don't know how to tell you this, but plenty of people are still lonely. I think you'll find it's a definite overstatement to suggest that Mother Theresa "eradicated" loneliness, or anything else.

It really helps moderators figure out if a topic is disintegrating because of general misbehavior versus someone in particular if the originally non-misbehaving members kept it that way. When everyone is prickly and argumentative and off-topic and personal then it's just too difficult to tell. We have neither infinite time to untie the Gordian knot, nor the wisdom of Solomon.
There used to be a comedian who presented his ideas for a better world, and one of them was to arm everyone on the highway with little rubber dart guns. Every time you see a driver doing something stupid, you fire a little dart at his car. When a state trooper sees someone driving down the highway with a bunch of darts all over his car he pulls him over for being an idiot.
Please make it easy to tell you apart from the idiots. Source
