is what I call them. They're all over the place here in Mississippi.
I once worked at a small town radio station about 50 miles from Jackson. The building housed two stations, an AM and an FM. I worked at the FM, but during the time I was there (early 80s) the AM changed format from Southern Gospel to Contemporary Christian.
Both stations were inundated with non-stop telephone calls from some of the most irate people I've ever encountered. The language they used would make Tony Soprano blush. We received death threats, arson threats, bomb threats, you name it. The most serious were reported to police, but it didn't do any good.
Some of the funniest calls came from people who, often while crying, told us they had "prayed about this" and that they were absolutely certain that God was "testing" us. They would beg us to pray about it ourselves because they were entirely convinced that, once we truly prayed, really hard, and read the bible and stuff, the Lord would show us the Way. If we didn't, we were doomed to burn in hell.
Mind you the music was Christian, it just wasn't hillbilly enough to save us from hellfire.
Nothing serious ever happened to anyone connected with that station, but we were all frightened for a time.
