Re: This makes No Sense
This entire post is confusing and vague to me, Rob. I don't understand your point at all.
Well a chapter of a book isn't very interesting without the context.
You'll have to read through our conversation from a few posts back if you want to make heads or tails of it.
Ringo does as masterful a job as anyone in confuting the issues.

Silly, silly, silly. The toes are in the front. Just keep following the toes.
Simple pleasure is so hard to find after riding the waves of bliss as you have huh?

No no... my indulgences have been... rather bland to a man of your tastes.
What's left when it doesn't do it for you any more Ringo?
Where do you go for excitement when you've exhausted all of the avenues of semi-legal erotica?
You go to the grave, that's where...
And yet forgiveness is within your reach. It's free!

But I can think of lots of things to doubt: Jesus' existence, Jesus' divinity, Paul's veracity, the Trinity, the Fall, the Flood, Satan, God's motives.... These are a few of my favouite doubts.
Doubts, Ringo?
They are some of my favourite study subjects.
Assume they are all absolutely true, and then ask yourself if you want them to be. Ask yourself if they have meaning for you. That's doubt.

reality has nothing to do with what you want to be true, but what is demonstrable.

I don't think I said that what I want makes anything true.
I said 'assume you aren't happy with the truth'.

I'm on topic
Phat wrote (Msg. 1)
Topic Question: Discuss why Christians or anyone else should or should not doubt, and whether it is ever appropriate to take a stand rather than remaining ever questioning and uncommitted.
but now Ringo writes:
There is every reason. How can you know you have the "right" answer? Don't you doubt your own infallibility?
Once more, the topic isn't about why you "shouldn't" doubt - it's why you're afraid to doubt. All you're doing is demonstrating that you are.
This is great. I'm breathing. Now I'm not infallible, so I recognize that there is some strange, remote possibility I could be mistaken about this fact. Just how much time should I spend doubting that I am breathing? Hmmm? What profound insight is to be gained? How will it profit me in any way to doubt that I'm breathing, just because I'm not infallible.
I contend that there are dozens, nay hundreds of issues it is foolish to go about doubting. So teach me, if you can. Convince me that confidence is never warranted, or grant that some issues aren't worthy of doubt. Perhaps we can make progress from there.

I never said that.
Some issues are worthy of doubt. The question still remains: Are you so afraid of doubt that you have to trivialize the important issues?

How and why is doubt essential to a Christian? And what is the nature of a beneficial doubt?
It forces one to open up within his (or her) assumptions.
It reveals the real motivations for the belief.
If you noticed... Jesus always questioned his questioners...
Mark 10:17 As Jesus started on his way, a man ran up to him and fell on his knees before him. "Good teacher," he asked, "what must I do to inherit eternal life?" 18 "Why do you call me good?" Jesus answered. "No one is good--except God alone.
John 18:33 Pilate then went back inside the palace, summoned Jesus and asked him, "Are you the king of the Jews?" 34 "Is that your own idea," Jesus asked, "or did others talk to you about me?"
John 3:9 "How can this be?" Nicodemus asked. 10 "You are Israel's teacher," said Jesus, "and do you not understand these things?
So to you I say this Anastasia...
You are Isreals teacher and you do not know these things?
Mt 7:5 You hypocrite, first take the plank out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to remove the speck from your brother's eye.
