Re: Not so nice, very confusing, quite untrue
I have no idea what you are talking about. I don't consider my religion any kind of abstraction. I'm sure there are abstractions involved but I probably just don't have a clue what you are talking about.

OK, well, I still don't get really what he WAS saying. Could somebody try it again in other words for us on the other side of the cultural divide or whatever the problem is?
He's just saying what everybody agrees on--that truth is a quality that applies to statements not to things.
A rock is neither true or false.
Only statements can be true or false.
Unfortunately, since you and I apparently are from a low-grade culture, we can't understand that.

Lo all, sorry to join in so late....
I'm a hard athiest, and a naturalist/materialist, whichever you prefer.
Sorry if I miss the point here but....
I've been told many times that atheism is a religion, a philosophy, and many other things often insulting.
I've heard that atheists are a group, in much the same way Christians are. That they must believe in Evolution. That they must be immoral, or at best ammoral. I've even heard it said that it's down to some kind of Freudian, Oedipal, Daddy-didn't-love-me complex.
Like the OP (I think), this irritates me, so here's my two cents.
A Theist believes in a certain God. They have a theology, which is based on their understanding of this God.
As an atheist, my theology (it would be silly to claim not to have one) does not include such a being.
My contention is that what theists commonly refer to as God, the first, cause, the prime mover, etc., is a philosophical concept designed to enclose an event, which is beyond human conception.
As such my claim is not in fact about "God", but about theist's perception.
I'm not saying there's no "cause" for existence, etc, I'm saying there's no way anyone can possibly claim knowledge about this.
You can't tell me your God exists, because you can't even tell me what He is.
Now don't get me wrong, I'm sure there's hundreds of things you can tell me about God, but I bet most concern what He isn't rather than what He is.
I bet there are differences, from believer to believer, which change His entire nature.
And I bet even His (alledged) morals are subjective.
