Re: What Would Jesus Do If ...
Abshalom writes me:

quote:
I was in the boy's choir at St. Andrew's Episcopal church in Jackson from about 1956 to about 1959, when a group of Black activists, some of whom were the now-famous Jackson lunch counter protesters, asked to be seated for Sunday services, and were escorted to the front two rows of pews.

I've heard about that. You're a little older than I am so I suppose your memory is more reliable.

St. Andrews has always had a very liberal reputation in Jackson, as has All Saints. I attended St. Collumb's over near the zoo, and although it wasn't quite as liberal I can only remember a minor stir when we had a black guest preacher one Sunday.

quote:
I wanted to point out that it's not just "bible-thumping" fundamentalists who act out their prejudice.

Point taken.

Jesus: Prince of Peace or God of War?
riVeRraT writes me:

quote:
He fought a spiritual battle.
If you walk into a temple, and put down a bunch of pharisee's, thats like starting war.

In a rhetorical sense, yes. War terminology is sometimes employed to describe what is often no more than a debate. There's nothing wrong with that, but I think we should be careful in using such martial phraseology when describing Jesus. Wasn't he the "Prince of Peace", after all?

Growing up in the Episcopal church I remember a number of Sunday sermons on this very subject. Perhaps those sermons helped to shape my thinking about Jesus. He was always presented to me as one who worked to unify rather than divide people. My church was careful to not portray him as warlike.

Damn son. I went to Prince of Peace. Bowling alley in the basement.

But you bring up a good point. Are some Christian sects more inclusive while others more exclusive?

Is that a general characteristic?(I realize that even in the most inclusive church there will be some members who are exclusive and that even in the most exculsive church there will be some members who are inclusive).

Re: dumbing it down
And I've lived around fundie Southern Baptists all my life and yes, they most certainly do think the Pentecostals are going to hell.

And i think your full of it.

These people are full of it to who ever you lived around. They were obveesly not true Baptist. Like I said black sheep and wolfs in sheeps clothing.

The only sin you notice is homosexuality? Read it again. Pay particular attention to the behavior of the "rightous" Lot.

And yes I have read it but you messed my point. Lot was not the reson Sodom and Gamora were destyoed. And while there might have been other sins that was obvessly the one that sticks out the most.

God kinda reminds me of a computer programer exept that he gave us a free will. A computer programer when they program the progarm into the computer if it does something it is not suppose to or something goes wrong it is deleted. If they didnt it would mess up everything else. God is the same way. If the person or persons is going to affect the wellbeing of evryone else they are sometimes deleted unless god has a purpose for them to be that way.

Let's see the evidence to back up this nonsense. You're not up to the task, of course, but let's see whacha got.

Wolud you do it? Most people would not cause of the fact that it isnt NATURAL. You dont se animals that are homosexual. Homosexuals are also not true to each other like a man and a women are. Homosexuals will never be really married in the true sense because they only have perverse fellings for each other. Love children and family are largely not on the homo's mind. All they want is to feel good throgh being rebelious to nature and God. And while were on the subject what do you think about someone marrying there sister, mother, dad, uncle, spike . And these things are deffenantly unaturall just like homosexuallaty.

Don't know much about history, huh?

I probbly know more than you sence I proffesanalize in it.

Here's a clue: the SBC was founded on the principle of legalized slavery.

Ya whatever. Get proof and from a LEGITAMETE source and I might consider actually looking in to it. I dont like wild goose chases. I wolud prefer it from some place I have heard of like say historychannal.com.

History Channel.com????

HistoryChannel.com

In the 19th century the Baptists split over the issue of slavery. This led to the formation of the Southern Baptist Convention in 1845

Re: dumbing it down
First: They were obveesly not true Baptist [because they believe certain groups are going to hell].
Then: if the person or persons is going to affect the wellbeing of evryone else they are sometimes deleted unless god has a purpose for them to be that way.
And: Homosexuals are also not true to each other like a man and a women are. Homosexuals will never be really married in the true sense because they only have perverse fellings for each other. Love children and family are largely not on the homo's mind.

If you represent a "true Baptist", then you've proven berberry's point. You are prejudiced against certain groups, and believe that they will be punished by God.

I don't know if "Christians need prejudice", as the thread title asks, but hopefully you realize that you definitely fall into the "prejudiced" category making rants like this.

Have you ever been friends with a homosexual person?

I probbly know more than you sence I proffesanalize in it.

I'm guessing that a professional historian would be able to spell "probably" and "since", and would know that "professionalize" is not a word, but would know how to spell it if it was.

As a stylistic note - why don't you try writing your posts in a word processing program so that you can run spell-check before posting? It would make your posts less painful to read.

No but I would go the extra mile with them as my God has commanded so that they may see God in me and rejoice in him and be turned.

ack.

I will not respond to your hate-speech, because of AdminAsgara's understandable warning above.

However, if you wish to discuss the other comments I made in my previous post, regarding you contradicting yourself regarding prejudice, feel free to respond to those comments.

Re: DO NOT TURN THIS INTO A BASHING THREAD
I am not picking on anyone for a belief. I don't think you will find many of the Christians around here that will claim I pick on anyone for a belief.

You did not make a statement of belief you made an assertion of fact. This is an assertion that will not be discussed on this thread. It is a volatile topic that can very quickly overtake a thread.

Any further discussion of my actions can be taken to one of the appropriate links in my signature.

Re: not too swift

You said you would go the extra mile to change them into something they are not.

That's like me saying I'm not racist because I befriend black people to bleach their skin white. It's absurd.

The truth is, getting back to the topic (somewhat), is that you hold negative and absolutely false misconceptions about a group of people that you have never interacted with on any level.

That is prejudice.

On top of that, you believe if that group doesn't "turn" away from their nature, that your God will punish them with wrath, possibly, to use your disgusting term, by "deleting" them.

That is mixing up your prejudice with your Christianity... and is not Christian at all.

Gay Bashing is Hate Speech
and we're not going down that road in this thread.

If it is fact then it must be spoken and not hid.

Drop it now.

If you wish you can propose yet another thread on the subject, but it will NOT be tolerated in this thread.
