This reminds me of a book by the late Terry Pratchett titled "Small Gods". The gist of it was that the more followers a god has the more powerful they are. The book starts out with a god trying to manifest itself into world and he ends up as a small turtle because he has only one follower. If he loses that one he poofs out of existence. It's a good read!
