I guess the Qumran Scrolls show that both Aramaic and Hebrew were in use as scripts, but which language was spoken by Jesus and his followers might be a different matter. If the ordinary Jew was talking Aramaic, did they use koine Greek to deal with authorities? Was koine the lingua franca of the Roman Empire?
Well the gospels even in greek still have Aramaic words scattered throughout.
The greek versions of the gospels have Jesus speaking Aramaic. Not just loan words but pieces of dialogue.
Pauls letters still have Aramaic in themn as well.

Hi,Judge, would Pilate have learned Aramaic? No mention of an interpreter.

Translation process
I thought it might be informative to see how translators go about a new version (for those who haven`t seen the site). Here is the NIV process.

Umm.. I really do not know and am not learned enough to know. It appears Jesus and pilate were able to converse, and Jesus and the Centurion.
IIRC correctly there is a portion of the book of Acts where a Roman soldier asks Pauyl whether he speaks greek or not, and I think paul indicates he does.
What language were they speaking before. Latin, Aramaic?
The risen Christ addresees Paul in the hebrew language (Aramaic?) in the book of Acts as well.
The makers of Mael Gibsons film used Aramaic and latin I think but I don't know why they did. Did they use Latin because he is RC of becuase history indicates they would have?
I do not know the answers, maybe someone does?

the film is filled with catholic dogma, so the first bet is a good one.
i imagine the romans would have used latin internally, but may well have used greek as a lingua franca to talk to the hebrews. (such an ironic and anachronistic use of the phrase, lol...)
anyone have any concrete research on this?

Re: Just wanted to say thanks.
Paul was classically educated and from an upper class family. I would imagine that he spoke several languages. In addition, there were many different ethnic groups in a relatively small area and I would imagine that the educated and merchants spoke several out of simple necessity.

man this is a whole new twist of the bible that makes me sickened by the bible. either the bible is made up OR we're over analyzing it and trying way too hard to understand things that we aren't supposed to or don't need to. since god created humans he has to know how our brain works and how curious we would be.. so why would he do this to us to make us question things like this? it's made us question the bible so much that we can't take it for what it is, and it's just a story to tell us about our history and what our future is to come. something to give us hope, but now we've over analyzed it. but there's so many variables that i can't swallow everything the bible teaches. so if i can't swallow some parts, why would i waste my time trying to swallow any parts of it?

you're making a fundamental mistake here.
god and the bible are two separate things.
so what if the bible is made up?

Then God may not be the God that's in the Bible and I would rather just call 'them' Our Creator, in which case would mean that the God from the Bible doesn't like shrimp, but that's just a story. So Our Creator may or may not like shrimp... we just don't really know.
I know that I'm going overboard with my nit picking, my point is more that I want everyone to know that I have let go of everything I have ever believed in because I realize the variables are too incredible to ever be able to understand and know things like that. Everything has a hole, and where this is a hole, there's no reason to believe in it. The Bible and religion all together have too many holes, that's why there are so many religions. No one really knows anything. My opinion is just as good as yours. I wouldn't even say that I disagree with what you say, I just won't accept it as a fact.

Just curious - what was your reaction when you discovered there was no Santa Clause (for those under age 8 - I'M KIDDING!!).
They say there's nothing like the ferver of the recently converted, but in your case there seems to be a ferver associated with recent unconversion.
