hi, yes i've been intermittent lately...lifes been busy.

They in no way show that an oversize race of humans ever existed, single freaks, yes coupled with human imagination and story telling could lead one to believe in a giant race of humans
i havnt really followed this whole thread so i dont know the arguments some have given for a race of giant people
Im certaily not aware of any such claims in the bible...I know it speaks of large individuals such as Goliath (who stood out in contrast to the rest of the Philistine army)
there is also the mention of the sons of Akan who were called 'giants' (hebrew: nephilim)
However this term was only applied to a few individuals in the tribe.
the only other occurance is with regard to the children born from Angelic fathers...these ones were the original 'nephilim' (giants) who were large and powerful due to having angels for fathers...but they were not a race of humans...they were hybrid offspring of a small number of the population
i'll have to read back and find out what this thread is about

but I wanted to start from scratch to determine who or what is the meaning of these mysterious giant people mentioned in the OT.
"There were 'giants' in the earth in those days" Gen. 6:4
We all know that the original hebrew word was "Nephilim" and then later translated to "giants."
While the english translations use the word 'giant', its important to understand the meaning of the hebrew word nephilim
Nephilim comes from a root word meaning 'fall'
The word Nephilim actually means 'Fellas' so liteally it means 'men who cause others to fall' or 'men who make others fall'
It would be wrong to conclude that 'nephilim' is a reference to a specific race of people. Nephilim is actually a verb...so its the act of causing one to fall that makes one a nephilim.
At the occurance in Genesis, the Nephilim were the children of the materialized angels. These angels had relations with women and the children born were of superhuman strength...but they used their strength to bring harm to others. They promoted violence and the people followed their example. This is why Genesis says that the world came to be filled with violence in connection with the nephilim...'the mighty ones' and the 'men of fame'
In regards to the mention of nephilim in Numbers 13.33, this was a 'false report' that was given about the inhabitants of the land of Cannan. The account is in no way claiming that there was a race of giants in cannan.
John Williams writes:
The Nephilim seem to be of mythological significance, and the term is rather vague. It can be translated to tyrants, villains, and mighty men. Basicaly, the Nephilim seem to be the hybrid children who were born from the gods and the earth women - similar to Hercules of the more well known Greek mythology.
yep, i agree that this is where the myths about giants originated. The reputation of the Nephilim (pre flood) likely gave rise to many mythologies. The decendents of Noah would have taken the pre flood story with them as they spread abroad and although distorted and embellished the original story, the resemblance in their ancient mythologies are unmistakably biblical.

There Were Bunnies in the Earth in Those Days
Hi lyx2no,
That is a normal size rabbit and a wide-angle lens.
Wide-angle lens or not, that is not an ordinary sized rabbit. It's a "Germen giant", an enormous variety of domestic bunny, bred for food. I agree that the picture is making use of perspective, but the bunny really is big. See here for another pic.
quote:
Herman could be 'biggest bunny'
A man has been showing off his gigantic rabbit named Herman. The mighty bunny weighs a massive 7.7kg, and his ears are a lengthy 21cm - almost as long as most pet rabbits are tall. And he is almost 1m tall. The German Giant is even big for his breed, which usually tip the scales at around 6kg. Herman lives in a specially built solid oak hutch and chomps his way through just over 2kg of food a day. His owner says his favourite snack is lettuce.
And that comes from no less a source than Children's BBC. If there is a more reliable source of information on the net, I'd like to know about it.
You are right in saying that this doesn't provide evidence for human giants, but I really don't think that Peg was trying to claim that.

Documents Mendocino State Hospital
According to Napa Valley State Hospital Record Manager there are no papers left from Mendocino State. Everything where destroyed in the mid 1970' John Aasens only paper from that hospital is his death certificate, and it say nothing of his hight. His skeleton found in A.Shryoks museum in Loma Linda CA ( it is tested, and it's him) is like it stands today, with "new" discs in the spine, is 7'2/4". According to MD. Horace Grays case report "The Minneapolis Giant" from may 1937 sets his hight to 7'0". His military records from 1918 sets him to 7'1". When he got confirmed by Rev. O. Hungness i Sigdal Lutheran Church he was the smallest in class. I have a schoolpicture of him together with his class and John is a skinny littel fellow. I have his shoes with 3 inch heels, jacket, trousers, hat and more. Im 6,5 and his jacket fits me quite good- just a little long sleves.
Picture with Harold Lloyd (5'7") from 1923, where John stand with his arm on the roof of a car- it's a 1922 T-Ford Coupe. According to Ford this car is 6'1" to the top of the roof.

Re: Reality bites, don't it
Medical records from Mendocino State Hospital on John Aasen is not yet released for public eye until 2013. The only journal/paper from that hospital is his death certificate. There are no measurements in it. Dr. H. Gray did a casereport on John Aasen in 1936 at Standford- published may 1937, and stated John to 7' (seven foot) 213,4. A measurement done at Mendocino State 3 june 1937 statesd him to 214 cm. Dr. Humberd measured John before doing the autopsy 8. august 1938 at noon. Flat on the table John measured- 212,9 cm. I have 9 other measurement done by medical doctors on John. The car in the back of the picture is a 1922 Ford Coupe measuring 185 cm to the roof. Cut of Johns 3 inch heels and take of his hat and you will find him to be 214 - 215 cm. Turn it upside down. Let's say that John was the claimed height of close to 9'. 279 cm Use a ruler and see the height of Harold Lloyd. He would be 219 cm.
