Gideon is a judge in the history of Israel. Outside of the Bible there are numerous sources that record geneologies and annuls of history. One is the Jewish historian Josephus. What if I say I don't believe Christopher Columbus ever existed? Does that nullify his achievements? That's 500 years ago. You probably believe the universe is 4.2 billion years old (give or take a million)but where is that corroborated?

As for it being a bird, that's a BIG bird AND a BIG story.
And "stopping the sun" is a BIG story and a BIG violation of the conservation of angular momentum and several other laws of physics. What makes one less believable than the other?

Since God made the sun is He not able to stop it? He parted the Red Sea, made a giant fish swallow Jonah, set a bush on fire but kept it from burning up. The list goes on and on. You can't use science to explain the Bible. It defies science over and over again. Besides, God made all the natural laws so He can bend them any time He chooses.

Great point. Let's talk about that law. A body set in motion will continue in motion unless acted upon by an outside force. If a body is spinning clockwise and continues spinning in that direction and explodes all pieces from said body will ALSO spin clockwise. If the Big Bang is true, why do two of the nine planets spin the opposite way of the others? BTW. where did all the matter in the universe come from and what caused it to compress let alone explode. Is THIS anymore feasible than Creation?

God didn't make the sun. There, unsupported assertions are easily made.

OOHH! BIG argument. I'm convinced. If God didn't make the sun , where did it come from? Deuce!

Nor to explain the stories in the Illiad or those of the Najavo. Prescientific myths like these three only touch on reality in symbolic ways: they don't recount "history."

Hmmm.....
"I don't get involved in frivolous rhetoric. "Thus saith the Lord.." means just that. We will see who is right at the judgement. Be sure to wear a name tag so I can recognise you among the hoardes being cast into the Lake of Fire. God's Word will cut through your rhetoric and pragmatic mindset faster than you realise. But then again, it's just a piece of motheaten parchment. Right?"
Well, if you don't "get involved in frivolous rhetoric", why are you posting? This is a debate (the last time I checked) and if you believe in absolute authority ("Thus saith the Lord"), then you will believe anything despite the evidence to the contrary. BTW, such a loving god he is, to cast "hordes" of people into a lake of fire. Prehaps you believe out for fear? If I had proof (not just a book of very questionable origins), I would believe (again). But then my motives would be in question...

Great point. Let's talk about that law.
Would you like to open a thread in the Cosmology forum to do so? We're wandering a little off topic over here.

AHH, but Judges DOES! YOu would not have even broguht it up if it wasn't for the Bible. It's interesting that the Bible has come under attack more than any other book in history. If it's just fairy tales, why waste time here talking about it? I know my mission but what is yours?

NOt if it applies to the argument. I felt it was a supportive point.

Re: Hmmm.....
Pogo,
First of all, there has been NO evidence presented to the contrary just opinions and suppositions. I HAVE a source and it's not opinions. My source is God's word.
Why do you obey the laws of your land (if you do)? Is it not out of fear of being punished? What is wrong with serving or worshipping out of fear? Do you thwart the pagans for worshipping out of fear? YES, I fear God. "It's a fearful thing to fall into the hands of an angry God." I also love Him because He loves me. (see my avitar)

wow
"I'm sorry to hear about your apostasy. If you were a Christian you ARE a Christian. Once you are in God's family you cannot get out. Only He can put you out. You are sealed by the Holy Ghost."
Cool, then I am a saved agnostic.
"Over 500 different cultures testify to a worldwide flood. Since Genesis talks about a worldwide flood, it stands to reason that the Bible is truthful in this area as well as others."
To a worldwide flood? So, then geology is a satanic conspiracy, designed to get us to THINK for ourselves based on the evidence and be cast into hell...Not to mention that the Genesis account post dates all of the other (local) flood stories. In fact, so does the biblical stories regarding a saviour that was born of a virgin, died (on a tree even), and was buried and resurrected (sources availible if you'd like). Are there multiple saviours?
As far as your testimony, you have to realize that it proves nothing. Many others have testimonies regarding Krishna, Odin, Budda (ok, Buddism), Quezocotol, etc. But with regard to your testimony, why did god spare you, yet thousands die needless deaths everyday (including the truely innocent, childen)?
"As for your happiness, BE HONEST! YOU may be happy for a time but you know inside yoouare empty or struggling with the Holy Spirit. Be warned, He will not always pull. There will come a time that God will stop calling you back and give you over to Satan. Don't let it be soon. Lord, bring Yaro back if he/she is your child. in Jesus' name. Amen Gotta go"
Wow. Pray for me, and let's see what happens. All that I (and I think I speak for most of us) is just some concrete proof. You know, evidence.

I think that everyone here that has posted, have answered your questions and much more patient than I. After all, they are not using outside sources, they are using the very bible that you claim is inerrant.
"Why do you obey the laws of your land (if you do)?"
Haha...yes, I do. Now, I simply do not steal because I would not want it done to me. I do not enjoy hypocrisy. I had my shed and garage broken into this past weekend, and it made me sick and angry. Furthermore, I do (try to anyways) what is right; what my common sense tells me (did I open a huge can of worms with that one?), not because of what some archaic book says.
Theo, do you kill witches? Kill homosexuals? Keep slaves? If not, why? The bible clearly says to do so (verses will be provided if you'd like).

Did Joshua Stop the Sun?
Theologian63 writes:
Believing in God's creation or that JOSHUA (not Gideon) could stop the sun takes faith. THAT'S how we can accept these stories.
But that's the entire crux of the matter, isn't it? You have faith that it happened, I have faith that it didn't. So did it happen or didn't it? How are you to answer that question on any objective level without evidence?
The historical sciences like cosmology, geology and biological evolution all rely on the fact that events leave evidence of themselves. Had the earth suddenly stopped rotating and a while later begun rotating again, would it not have left evidence?
