Correct. Apes did not turn into humans nor are we their descendants. What we say is that apes and humans share a common ancestor.
Would it not be better to say that modern apes did not turn into humans nor are we their descendants. The last common ancestor of 'apes' and humans would almost certainly be classified as an ape. Taxonomically after all humans are still classified as apes.
