Re: Phil's Kids
Mr H,
I honestly believe there is nothing anyone can do. The vast majority of "anti-evolutionists" who arrive on an internet message board have pre-fabricated, hermitically-sealed, titanium-clad preconceptions that no amount of discussion, argument, or sources will budge. They are here not to learn, or be exposed to new ideas, or have their understanding clarified in any sense. They are here to slay the dragons or witness to the heathens. When their fundamental errors are corrected or the flaws in their reasoning pointed out, they generally simply leave.
The ONLY purpose I can see for continuing to post on a board such as this is the hypothetical existence of the ever-elusive "lurker" - the person who hasn't yet made up his/her mind. The overwhelming evidence for the theory that best explains the diversity of life on Earth is readily available in any major bookstore. Numerous scientists - more every time I visit - are publishing quite readable and easily understood books on the subject. A short visit to the Borders Bookstore science section reveals dozens of titles on every life-sciences subject you can imagine. Some of the best thought by some of the top biologists, ecologists, paleontologists etc has been distilled and condensed for the "lay reader" - more and more often by the original researchers (Raup, Mayr, Ehrlich, Knoll, Diamond, Wilson, etc) as well as by top-flight science writers. Anyone who can work their way through even half-a-dozen of these works and remain unconvinced is so-closed minded that you won't change their opinions without using nuclear weapons.
There is NO WAY you can reach the committed creationist. And there is NO WAY you can stop them from preaching their high-sounding but ultimately simplistic pablum to those who refuse to make the minimal effort to educate themselves with what if freely available. What's even funnier to me is that most scientists I've encountered absolutely love it when a layman comes up to them somewhere and says, "Hey, I read your book!"
