going just west of it won't be that much better due to the way the winds turn
there's a whole mess of bad waiting to happen down there, whole portions of NO are below sea level, because the delta is sinking and not being replenished anymore by silt deposits from the MS river (thanks corps of engineers and people moving into places that shouldn't be built on?) yeah it could be real bad camille had a storm surge of something like 20 feet and came in at high tide, if memory serves. stack waves on top of that. oops ... make that 25 feet:Page Not Found we are limited in our ability to understand by our ability to understand RebelAAmerican.Zen[Deist

Used to live in Pascagoula MS. We were 5 miles from the coast. The house next door was moved on it's foundation by a hurricane (probably Camille). The problem is that there is no high ground and you're talking 5 feet to waterlevel.

Yes, remember, this one already crossed FL as a cat 1 -- and killed 7.
People who live in {potential (big) harms} way should be prepared for harm to visit. Whether earth-quake, volcano, hurricane or tornado.

The levees are there because New Orleans is currently below sea level. If the levees break (or just are overtopped by the storm surge) the city will flood with no place for the water to run off to. Couple this with a power outage to shut off the pumps and you have Lake New Orleans.
There would also be much damage because the waves on top of the storm surge would reach the second floors if not the third floors. I have read an account of one (1) woman who survived a {Camille} hurricane party on the third floor of a building in Pass Christian by going out the window as the waves bashed in the second floor and the building collapsed, then clinging to a tree for hours before ending up ~50? miles away when the storm let up. Yes after the storm passes, the electricity can be restored, the low areas pumped out, the mud {sucked\swept\shovelled} up, the walls and floors disinfected, the water supply system purged and sanitized, the road, bridges and levees repaired and the damaged buildings rebuilt, etc... And it probably will be because (1) people are stupid about where they live(1) and (2) there is no problem when there is no hurricane (perhaps you know the folk song about the virginia traveller?), and (3) because the government will pay for it (gotta love that liberal government social protection stuff eh?) (1) - NOTE: this applies to people living on top of fault lines, next to volcanoes, on eroding banks, on low outerbank islands (that are in a constant state of movement downcurrent), on flooding rivers, etc (have I left anybody out?) we are limited in our ability to understand by our ability to understand RebelAAmerican.Zen[Deist

probably retribution for all those new gambling boats on the coast eh?
Camille had a 25' surge; it obliterated the MS Gulf Coast and did massive damage in Plaquemines Parish, LA. It was more powerful than Katrina (at least in her current state), but it wasn't as large. cat 5 is the biggest, so it is everything greater than ... When you add energy to a system you get increased power in the (effects\results). Global Warming adds energy. I've wondered lately what is the teperature gradient difference between class 1 and class 5 hurricanes ... a couple of degrees? less? wonder if they will add a cat 6 if we get a lot of 5's. we are limited in our ability to understand by our ability to understand RebelAAmerican.Zen[Deist

looks like the news is coming in on how bad it was.
New Orleans got lucky (again), but towns east of it were hit bad. What stuns me is the people who were clamoring to be helped (after being told to evacuate) and that had KIDS! I wonder how many "Darwin Awards" will go out eh? we are limited in our ability to understand by our ability to understand RebelAAmerican.Zen[Deist

When a city is under evacuation notice transportation is provided, usually by the National Guard (to ensure that the vehicles can get through). You have to specifically refuse to be taken to stay.

my apologies. my first answer was based on my experience in MS before the daze of pre-emptive government.
Now it appears that (1) in spite of the known extreme hazard to NO (talked about every time a hurricane tips it's hat that-a-way) and (2) in spite of a supposed heightened awareness of mass devastation from any cause (bio-terror to suit-case bombs) that in the case of disaster hitting NO, there was no plan, not at the city level, not at the state level, and not at the federal level, to get the people out of harms way before the event, or even to deal with the aftermath. It seems that the plan was "let's wait and see what happens and deal with it as it goes ..." From what I can see, the only government agency that planned ahead on this was the US Coast Guard (good job eh?). I'm stunned. we are limited in our ability to understand by our ability to understand RebelAAmerican.Zen[Deist

but I'm not sure they will let private citizens just come in and help like that. they are, I heard it on the news, with a parkinglot full of little boats from up and down the coast.

when you add heat you add energy.
add energy to any system and you see more activity. the difference between a cat 4 and a cat 5 hurricane is dependant on the temperature of the water ... just a small difference is all it takes blanket denial is not realistic we are limited in our ability to understand by our ability to understand RebelAAmerican.Zen[Deist
