Hi Hambre,
Sadly I was to late to register for the expo and could not attend. I was particularly interested in Fred's presentation "Caddyshack as a model of information loss in DNA: Proof of the Ark"
Sadly the envelope with my registration fee came back because of insufficient postage as I mistakenly addressed it to the Wicked Witch of the East rather than West which is more expensive...I tried to relay my mistake to the postman but Toto apparently did not understand.
I would have really liked to have seen the U of Oz campus as I heard that such luminaries as Kent Hovind often receive their degrees from flying monkeys..and who wouldnt want to see that?

Hi O Hairy One,
I'm sort of back but mostly not. I have none of my reference books, and almost none of my files. Not completely moved in yet. I was able to hand carry back a total of two books - Jones's "Art of Warfare in the Western World" and Ridley's "Red Queen" - so I can't even respond to holmes on the warfare thread, let alone get into any deep science discussion yet. Hopefully by the end of the month (assuming things don't get held up in Ukrainian customs, that is). I'll try and lurk and post where possible, but I'm using my wife's computer in the interim, so don't have a lot of the neat files I used to have on my old one.

Hi, Quetzal!
You've probably told the story already, probabably I just need a pointer to the right message, but what's going on with you? Ukranian customs? My great-grandparents had Ukranium customs, but they gave them up when they emigrated.

Hi Percy,
My project in Ukraine finally ran out of money after three years, and the powers-that-be couldn't get their collective act together fast enough on a new, longer project to keep me in the style to which I've become accustomed . So I was forced to shut down the program, close up the office, etc, and move back (temporarily, I hope) to Washington. I'll be twiddling my thumbs (figuratively) on a short-term assignment until a decision on the main project is reached. I'm now battling with US customs on my computer, books, etc that I shipped from Kyiv. Only, I'm sure, to turn around and ship everything back to Ukraine in a month or two. Sigh. I'll change the email address in my registration here once I get my own toys back. In the meantime, I hope it doesn't cause you any problems if I simply use the same username and login off my wife's computer. The ISP will be different, but it's still the same ol' Q.

Hi, Quetzal!
You lead an exciting life!
In the meantime, I hope it doesn't cause you any problems if I simply use the same username and login off my wife's computer.
This would be SOP. Many members access the site from different computers and ISPs, probably mostly dependent upon whether they're at home or work or visiting relatives.
Sometimes people register as more than one ID using different email addresses, and when we administrators suspect this has happened we check the IP addresses. Of course, if the person uses computers with completely different IP addresses for each ID then we wouldn't be able to tell both accounts were the same person. And it's also not uncommon to find more than one person using the same computer or computers on the same local network, so sometimes matching IPs doesn't work. For instance, IP addresses tell me that Schrafinator and Zhimbo are likely the same person, but of course we know that's not the case - or is Zhimbo merely a construction of Schraf?

Conspiracy Theorists Conspiring
Oh, for crying out loud, how many times have we heard the Schraf-faked-her-death rumors, the unsubstantiated Schraf sightings in Italy, the Zhimbo-is-writing-posts-for-Schraf nonsense? Is Oliver Stone in on this one too?

Re: Conspiracy Theorists Conspiring
Well, okay, ignore the accumulating evidence if you like, but I think the "Were there one or two IPs" issue is far from settled.

Hi Q,
Glad to hear you made it out of Ukraine in one piece. Especially if you flew Aeroflot where when the captain says "we will be on the ground shortly" you start hoping you actually have a life insurance policy. Just to maintain geographical equivalence, I was not too far away from you last week in NYC...a colleague of mine (who's paper I sent you ) and I were modelling hyperdisease using beer, wine and white Russians...things did not go well for the hypothesis as none of us became extinct.
Like you I am mostly lurking since I came back from NY with a nice pile-o-crap to do...and if that lame excuse is good enough for Fred Williams it is good enough for me ...however, I have not watched Caddyshack recently.

Crap, the powers that be shut him down.
He was about to blow the lid off this whole thing.

I still want to know what happened to Parasomnium.
And incidentally, it looks like Dan is smoking again.

Don't try to look all innocent, I saw your avatar sneak a quick butt earlier this morning. Are mornings the hardest, Dan?
