Re: What foolishness?
Prophex's argument was that evolution must be false because life isn't without meaning.
What I was agreeing with Prophex about was that evolution shows we are not special--although I might add that you don't need evolution to show you that. One might not give one thought to the origin of species and still come to the same conclusion just from daily observation of the arbitrary, accidental nature of life.
After that, I part ways with Prophex.

Re: What foolishness
It seems to me that you think it's more .... SOMETHING to be right rather than to be happy. You'd rather have a world view that you think is correct, rather than have a world view that makes you happy
That's right. The word is "honorable." It's more honorable to be right than to be happy.
However, I'm happy enough. It doesn't take much to make me happy--a freedom from irksome duties for a few hours, maybe a little something in a brandy snifter . . .

Re: What foolishness
What would you like to make of it that you can't due to limitations?
A longer life, for starters. I've spent many years learning how to live. It seems a pity that I can't have another hundred or so in which to apply the lesson.
In such a case, after many years, I might have done something. I might have been a contender.

Re: What foolishness
How would a longer life give meaning to your life? I thought you said life was meaningless.
What does a longer life have about it that it lends intrensic meaning to your existence?

Is there meaning in honor? Looks to me like you found something that has meaning to you--honor.
That's cool.
However, I'm happy enough. It doesn't take much to make me happy--a freedom from irksome duties for a few hours, maybe a little something in a brandy snifter . . .
Bah come on, come on. I bet I know one thing that makes you happy--sharing your writing and having it well received. I bet the writing process itself is pretty contenting as well. I mean, I'm sure at one level it's very discontenting, but at another level contenting.
I think we're all interesting in sharing what you write again. It's enjoyable.
Ben

I don't know, but I'd like to find out. However, that's not going to happen, so we have to make do with what we've got.
These are a few of my favorite things . . . (music increasing in volume)
When the dog bites, when the bee stings,
When I get terminal cancer,
I just remember my favorite things,
And then I feel just fine.

Musical swells
Now you're rockin', robin!
C'mon, everybody, sing!

Re: Musical swells
Some things in life are bad
They can really make you mad
Other things just make you swear and curse.
When you're chewing on life's gristle
Don't grumble, give a whistle
And this'll help things turn out for the best...
And...always look on the bright side of life...
Always look on the light side of life...
If life seems jolly rotten
There's something you've forgotten
And that's to laugh and smile and dance and sing.
When you're feeling in the dumps
Don't be silly chumps
Just purse your lips and whistle - that's the thing.
And...always look on the bright side of life...
Always look on the light side of life...
For life is quite absurd
And death's the final word
You must always face the curtain with a bow.
Forget about your sin - give the audience a grin
Enjoy it - it's your last chance anyhow.
So always look on the bright side of death
Just before you draw your terminal breath
Life's a piece of shit
When you look at it
Life's a laugh and death's a joke, it's true.
You'll see it's all a show
Keep 'em laughing as you go
Just remember that the last laugh is on you.
And always look on the bright side of life...
Always look on the right side of life...
(Come on guys, cheer up!)
Always look on the bright side of life...
Always look on the bright side of life...
(Worse things happen at sea, you know.)
Always look on the bright side of life...
(I mean - what have you got to lose?)
(You know, you come from nothing - you're going back to nothing.
What have you lost? Nothing!)
Always look on the right side of life...

Talkin' Garbage Blues
from Spanky and Our Gang, circa 1968:
Up in the mornin', just about four,
Put on my shoes, and I'm out the door.
Life is such a terrible bore.
I'm a garbage man.
Ridin' on the truck with my friend, Lou,
He said, "Hey, man, you're lookin' kinda blue!"
Yeah, don't this job ever get to you?
I mean...all this garbage...
"Naw, man, I got just the thing you need.
Here--take a puff of this funny lookin' weed--
Go on, man, the first one's free..."
Well, the sun was risin'
And shinin' in the sky,
The garbage truck was drawin' flies--
I didn't care, man, I was ridin' high!
I was out of it!
Chorus:
Much too good to be just for the young!

While we are on that topic, I would like to express my appreciation for Message 6. Great writing.

Great writing
Thanks, nmr! I've just been a little concerned about the decline of reading in our society, so I thought I'd share my finds.

After the heart attack, after the bypass,
After a tumor or two,
I just remember my favorite things
That I can no longer do!
