Re: Anti-family values
:D

Editted to add* content.

Ok...in all seriousness, what exactly could we (I guess I'm considered right wing kind off) actually do to become less right wing?

Technically speaking, as a Catholic, I do have some views concerning the dealth penalty that would put me in left field. Same with some social issues, such as feeding the poor, etc. And technically speaking, again as a Catholic, I do consider my representative here on earth to be Pope Benedict. And locally, we tend to look towards our Bishops in the adminsitrative sense over our local areas.

But, all in all, I'm not really sure how I can change without actually changing inwardly. I mean, it's what I believe -- so how can I simply change my position to conform to left-wing expectations?

I can't if it's something I don't agree with.

*which I find ironic since most people tell me my posts are too long.

Arachnophilia, I don't know if you saw that message, but you were the prime "other member" I was thinking of. What's the matter with you two?

ok, that last one was actually meant to be a valid (if cryptic) point. dorfman indicated that christ never said to defer our freedom of thought to another. i was indicating that he did imply an individualistic approach -- the people who look at the people who find. we are not handed reason.

of course, the statement can, and is read the opposite way as well, which would be contrary to his post.

would you rather i quoted one of the most well-known verse in the bible, and explained that either argument can be supported by it?

Moose,

We lead not only by enforcing the rules, but by providing an example.

Idiots.

Not the right example, my friend. I'm really disappointed.

I don't think a suspension is going to be helpful. Another admin may feel differently. But I'd urge you that, if you're really feeling this frustrated, take a break for yourself.

    My apologies Adminnemooseus.

I didn't mean to upset you with that post. And I honestly didn't see that warning before.

Anyway, I guess that's all I have to say.

Hope this post wasn't too short (or too long).

    Topic abandonment alert
    See topic title.

    Also, message 1 was:

I have been wondering about the complaints I have been hearing from Christians who say that Jerry Falwell, Pat Robertson and James Dobson do not speak for them even though they are the three most prominent Christian political and religious figures in America today.

Clearly, all three are radical right-wing Fundamentalists and only represent a small but vocal minority of Christians in the US. However, they are the only prominent political Christian voices I ever hear, and this tends to color my view of American Protestant Christians overall.

Why is there no organized, vocal mainstream Christian opposition to these men, and if they do not represent "the rest of the Christians", who does?

I suspend myself in protest of Arach's suspension
I don't think a suspension is going to be helpful. Another admin may feel differently. But I'd urge you that, if you're really feeling this frustrated, take a break for yourself.

    Ben,

I recall when Moose made a big deal about lack of capitalization which nobody else seemed to mind very much, heck, I hadn't even noticed till the brouhaha brought it to my attention.

Arach is one of my favorite contributors here with his well reasoned and researched explanation of the OT and the original Herbrew meanings.

I often grow weary of the posters who often present incoherent nonsense in defense of outlandish whacko notions.

Maybe the home page could carry news items and warnings like "Of late there have been too many brief posts, a crack down is underway, after one warning 24 hour suspension will be meted out" or something.

It does look to me like Moose has commited the same offense as those he has suspended and therefore should suspend himself at the very least. Also 48 hours seems way too long, particularly because as I've said Arach is one of the most informative and reliable posters on this board.

So, I hereby voluntarily suspended myself for 48 hours with the suggestion and recommendation that others concerned with this action do the same to protest the one sided, overly harsh suspension of Arach without a warning.

I'll return Wednesday unless in the interim Ray and Randman manage to bury this board in incomphrehensible whacko ramblings and psuedo logical gobblygook.

    lfen

Re: I suspend myself in protest of Arach's suspension
    lfen,

Whatever your point is, I'm sure it's best made in the thread "General Discussion of Moderating Procedures", as linked below. Contrary to popular belief, this is an actual topic thread that's totally being lost in all this side-issue nonsense.

I'm fine with disagreements with moderating procedures. I'm not OK with constantly burying topics with all this kind of talk. There's a reason we made the moderating threads and that we link them in our admin posts.

It's so we don't have to lose sight of the topics in threads, just to discuss non-topic stuff.

I encourage you to bring up the issue there. I refuse to address this kind of issue in this thread any more. I'm closing this thread, and when I re-open it, I'll post the topic.

    But...Jesus?

My sentiments exactly, Modulous. Jesus DOES speak through believers, however. Not all who claim to be Christian are Christian. Some are mere social activists who, although sounding much more humanistic and clever than Dobson or Robinson ever could, are just as liable to lead the flock astray into a secular humanistic philosophy devoid of any real power.

Beware the conservative fundamentalists, to be sure. Beware also the liberal social activists such as Bishop Shelby Spong, a man who has denied the virgin birth of Jesus Christ and who reduces Christianity to a do-good philosophical humanism. Snake oil comes in many flavors!

    Purpose Driven Life
My mom and her church groups seem to enjoy Rick Warren and his book "Purpose Driven Life".

On the flip side of your main question about who seem to speak for the Right, is who seems to be speaking for the Left?

Whenever my father wants to belittle liberals, he brings up something that Barbra Streisand or Sean Penn said or did. I of course counter with something Falwell or Robertson said or did.

I, as a liberal kinda guy, do not for a moment think that Streisand speaks for me, and I am just as certain that conservative folks probably feel the same way about Falwell and company.

    How about Jesse Jackson?
He's an ordained minister and public figure?

Or Jimmy Carter? He's another very public figure claiming Jesus Christ as his Saviour, teaching Sunday school, and by most accounts, a real Christian.

One thing to keep in mind is that being a public figure because you have a media ministry or job that is public due to political or social activity does not mean you are considered the most esteemed spiritual leader, and esteemed spiritual leaders often do not have TV and radio ministries of the type to put them in the eye of the secular media.

Falwell is interviewed on CNN frequently about political issues, and Streisand and Penn are not. Falwell has many thousands, perhaps millions, or faithful supporters who send him lots of money. Babs and Penn do not.

Falwell claims he speaks for all Christian conservatives.

    On national television. Quite frequently.

If he doesn't, then who does?
