This is interesting so I thought I'd spin it off into a new thread. Percy started it with:
Percy writes:
A comment about being suspended or banned: I'm currently banned at Terry's TalkOrigins site over at MSN and have been for several years. He didn't like my aggressive discussion style, and so he banned me. But there's no hard feelings. Terry is welcome here, and I'd be glad to participate at his site again were he to let me back in.
I'm also banned at one other site, probably now defunct. Back in early 1997 someone started up a Creationism discussion board at Yahoo. I joined and was the only other member. Me and the board's owner discussed things for a week or two, then he banned me. That left just him. Weird, huh!
And I replied with mine:
Crash writes:
I get banned every other month, it seems, at the blog of an aquaintance of mine from college. (Probably revenge for that time I whupped his ass at Trivial Pursuit.) Then he updates his blog software, apparently loses his ban list, and I'm back.
In fact I'm probably long overdue for a temp suspension here at EvC, if only for all you other people to catch up.
And then Berberry dopped by with:
Berberry writes:
I'm proud to say that I got banned at the christianity.com message boards.
Berb, I'm curious, was it a stealth ban? Or do you have the thread where it occured?
Anyone else have their favorite gettin' banned memories?

I'm too nice of a person to get banned by anyone. I've been online for 4 years and have only been suspended twice.
The thing is I'm too sensitive to stay for long at christian forums. Everytime I visit a christian forum, I almost always stumble immediately into threads where people post their ignorant bigoted views.
For example:
I just spent 5 minutes reading through that and I'm already depressed. The sadest thing is most of them made claims about homosexuals that just aren't true at all. They probably heard that from their pastors and never questioned it.

I got banned with no notice at TribulationForces - I had pointed out, accurately I thought, that some of the scientists of the early 1800's were Christians but not young-earthers. Barbarian, I presume the one who sometimes posts here, was banned about the same time. I'm not sure if I could stand going back to look again - I'd probably have to register under a new name and try to stir up trouble. There are some highly delusional folks there, if anyone finds that sort of thing entertaining.

I've never been banned, despite my best efforts. I came close on the old Warren Ellis forum once, but... well Hell, who hasn't?

"Egos drone and pose alone, Like black balloons, all banged and blown
On a backwards river, infidels shiver In the stench of belief
And tell my mama I'm a hundred years late
I'm over the rails and out of the race
The crippled psalms of an age that won't thaw ringing in my ears"

Boohoo, I`m a ban virgin. Any quick tips on how to go about it? Mere violations of house rules don`t work. Is 'Go to atheist hell' a tad tame? Since only Creos are permitted ad homs, I feel a little hog-tied. Can I demand banning? Educate me.

You'll find the second page of the thread in question right here. In the course of that one page I joined the forum and was banned.
You'll note that I still referred to myself as a liberal Christian at the time. I no longer do. The same guy who posted that final message closing the thread was the same one who sent me a PM (or maybe an email, I've forgotten) telling me I was no longer welcome.

you can argue , so long as you agree with us..
I would love to get in there but I feel I would run foul of rule 17 of the TOS almost imediately.
What is it about relious forums that makes them feel the need to have a clause that says in effect "agree with us or we will ban you.."

Re: you can argue , so long as you agree with us..
Naturally I'm fascinated by the rules of other forums. Here's rule 17 from the discussion board at Christianity.com:
17. Do not make statements either by posts or posting URLs to other Websites which advocate activities, beliefs or teachings contrary to those of Christianity as articulated by the historic creeds, as understood by Evangelicalism, and as interpreted by Christianity.com its sole discretion.
If we were to have an equivalent rule here it might look like this (we have 10 rules now, so I'll make this one 11):
11. Do not make statements either by posts or posting URLs to other Websites which advocate principles, beliefs or teachings contrary to those of science as represented in the technical literature and as generally interpreted by the scientific community, and concerning which EvC Forum has full and sole discretion.
Such a rule here might cause a few howls!
Anyway, for the record, any and all views are permitted here as long as they're supported by evidence and reasoned argument.
--Percy
