My father is 80, soon to be 81 in may, and has Alzheimer's. I was wondering if anyone here might have some words of wisdom or anything I might gain a little insight from. He is currently taking Aricept and his cognitive ability shows some promising signs, I hope?
Thanks for any input.

Thanks for any input.
My dad began to emerge into chronic Alzheimer's in his 60s. He died of it at about my age (75). When I got into the naturals as a young man, my dad chided me as a health nut. I tried to convince him of some ways he should change his diet so as to be healthy.
Alzheimer's has a lot to do with keeping the blood flowing freely in the arteries. That has a lot to do with diet.
The claim is that Alzheimer's is irreversible. Perhaps so, but it is my belief that even in old age, one can stabilize the progression of it and perhaps reverse to some extent. Imo, if he is willing, it's worth a try.
Some things to avoid in the diet is all dairy products. My dad was an ice cream addict, literally. Avoid all hydrogenated products, including conventional peanut butter, etc. Read all labels. Avoid cooking in aluminum ware. Take the essential omega 3 oils such as fish oil, flax oil, borage oil, olive oil etc. Flax seed oil is the richest source of omega 3s (a tablespoon a day recommended.) I buy my flax seed oil frozen and keep it in the freezer. In my refrig freezer it doesn't harden. We also grind fresh flax seed daily. These oils are very susceptible for rancidity at room temperature. All natural vitamins such as a high quality antioxidants are important. Vitamin E, A C selenium, , phosphatidyl serine, ginko biloba etc are examples. Antioxidants can repair damaged cells to some extent.
One form of phosphtidyl serine is lecithin. It works like a detergent and helps keep the arteries open.
Acetyl L-Carnitine is recommended by one doctor who recommends 1000 to 2000 mgs daily in divided doses (with food). Studies show that show it may retard deterioration in Alzheimer's disease, progression of disease an
Alpha lipac acid is a natural being studied for Alzheimer's. Magnesium is an important mineral which many Americans are deficient in.
Fresh carrot juice has about 11 different anti-oxidants in it. It can be purchased in Wegmans and the organic sections in supermarkets these days.
Most supplements should be taken with food. It would be good to find an alternative natalist practitioner. If your dad is taking prescription drugs, professional advice should be consulted before taking some of the above so as not to cause trouble.
The most important is to avoid all forms of junk food and sweets. Drink plenty of good pure drinking water, no chlorine or fluorides. I alternate drinking a little (I say a little) beer, wine and whiskey. It has the tendency to suds out the arteries, but two much can harden them. Of course most beers and wines have bad nitrites in them so they must be used sparingly or buy the more expensive organic ones. I don't think whiskey usually has them.
Mild exercise is also beneficial.
Of course, having said the above, most here consider me to be a demented nut job, so you might want to take that into consideration before passing what I do on to your ole dad.

Re: Alzheimer's Suggestions
Thanks Buzz, Many of things you recommend I already do for him, switched to almond and soy milk instead of dairy. I am going to look into the other stuff you mentioned as well, Thank you for sharing it with me.
Frako...well that is about as positive an attitude as anyone with alzheimer's could have, thanks for the smile.

Re: Alzheimer's Suggestions
If he is on any medications, check to see what nutrients they deplete from the body so you can add those back in. Aricept (donepezil HCI) doesn't seem to deplete anything that I could find.
Also check B-12 levels. Sublingual is usually better for the elderly. A symptom of low B-12 is memory loss, but I don't think it has been found to reverse Alzheimers. It is necessary for maintaining healthy nerve cells and red blood cells.
Just some more things to think about. Good luck.
