I'm a traditional catholic - I believe in microevolution but not macroevolution and it seems like these forums would be a great way to practice apologetics and work on my debate skills.

debate skills
... and it seems like these forums would be a great way to practice apologetics and work on my debate skills. LOL, boy did you come to the right place! There are a lot of people here who love to discuss and debate. Some seem to switch sides just to keep the debates going. They might rather argue than not. But if you've read any existing postings you will find that it ain't easy here. You don't get to get away with much.
...I believe in microevolution but not macroevolution ... The coffee house isn't a good place to debate that one. It needs to be a thread in "Biological Evolution". Let me see if I can find one. Here are a few:
Is there evidence for macroevolution?"Macro" vs "Micro" genetic "kind" mechanism? Those two might be the best to contribute to. Then some others:
Macroevolution - An experimentally created incipient species of DrosophilaPigeons and Dogs: Micro or Macro evolution?Evidence For Evolution - Top Ten Reasons The first thing you will have to do is define what you mean by "macro" and "micro" evolution. They have a general defintion within biology and, by that definition, macro has been shown to occur currently.

You came to the right place. Indeed, I initially came here for the same exact reason.
"...research [is] a strenuous and devoted attempt to force nature into the conceptual boxes supplied by professional education. Simultaneously, we shall wonder whether research could proceed without such boxes, whatever the element of arbitrariness in their historic origins and, occasionally, in their subsequent development." Hi, I'm new too, imagine that. I'm an ex-catholic turned nontheist. These things happen.

What is traditional apologetics?
Hi, Trent13. Hit me up, YO. What is traditional apologetics? If you give me a good answer, we can start a new thread on the issue.... Welcome to EvC by the way.

Apologetics?
Trent13, Your use of the word "apologetics" is what jumped out at me in your post. My association with the word has me thinking in the negative. From my perspective, apologetics, being a derivative from the word apology means that people are making apologies or excuses for whatever is being discussed. In other words, it is pure and simple spin-doctoring, or spin control. For me, that is a negative. So, my question to you is, why would you want to practice that kind of thing? And instead of calling it apologetics, why not call it "defense of" whatever the topic is? That has a much better ring to it, don't you think. So, like Phat, I'd like some discussion from you on your use of the word apologetics. Like Ned said, the actual topics you want to discuss belong elsewhere. Here, let's discuss "apologetics", if you don't mind. Verzem

Hmm. It's been a while since people introduce themselves first and plunge into debates later... maybe we should revive the much-abused Welcome Visitors?

Re: What is traditional apologetics?
Thanks to everyone for their replies - I don't really know how this forum works yet, so I couldn't answer everybody's posts. Sorry. I would have replied sooner, but I was on a retreat for a week and the week before that I didn't have internet access. But I'm back and look forward to some intellectual discussion. Someone asked me why I was calling apologetics apologetics, "what was I apologizing for?" - in the original sense of the term, the word came from Greek and carried into Latin - the translation is a defense of something that is done, or believed, etc... Being a Traditional Catholic (I dare say that much controversy will be raised as to this distinction), apologetics applies to the defence of the Catholic faith and its doctrines as they have always been believed according to Tradition.
