What?
Later today EvC Forum will be moving to a new webhost. The board will be shut down for a couple hours a little later this morning in order to transfer the more than GigaByte of forum data, and then it will be reopened.
Why?
We've outgrown our shared webhost server. EvC Forum requires a ton of disk space and processor time, so we're moving to a dedicated server. The "dedicated" in "dedicated server" means it is dedicated solely to our needs. Since EvC Forum controls the server, there will be no restrictions on disk space or processor time.
How?
The increased cost of the server will be offset by renting out server space to other (non-demanding) domains. Please send email to
Admin if you'd like to rent webhost space for $100/year. Features include CGI Perl, SSI, ModPerl, PHP, MySQL, email, Apache 2.0, TomKat 4 (Java server), FTP, Telnet and SSH access. Your own IP address is available for an additional $20/year. Other features are negotiable. I'd be happy to answer any questions for those just getting started creating their own website.
What Else?
When a website moves there is a short period where it can't be accessed by its name. That's because the Internet servers that keep a record of the location of each website take time to be updated. It can take from 6 to 24 hours before all servers on the Internet are udpated, usually toward the lower end of that range recently.
You will still be able to access the site during this brief period because I'll post the temporary URL at the old site, which will include the IP address. So the bottom line is that the site will be down for a couple hours later this morning, then it will be back up but with a brief period where you'll need to access the site using the IP address I provide.
