How, exactly, does one torture a freakin' cracker? Waterboard it? Deprive it of sleep? Starve it? But those aren't examples of torture.

Art writes: nope. im just getting annoyed with being called a ignorant racist bigot.... On this thread? It's probably not a good idea mixing a conversation across more than one thread (without explaining links). Who's called you an ignorant racist bigot, and on what thread?

I dont expect you to understand, if you are from England. a guy who claims equality for gays, yet still lives in a place where the Act of Settlement 1701 is a reality. dont point the bigotry finger at us, without looking in the mirror 1st. WTF are you on?
stealing of a consecrated eucharist is definately a serious crime. stealing unconsecrated wafers is a petty offense. It really easy to tell the difference, the consecrated ones are kept in a special place locked in the church, the wafers are kept in the back on a shelf. If these crackers are suposedly the actual (as opposed to just representing) body of Christ and people are eating them does that not make them cannibals? That was the question. What is the answer?

body of Christ and people are eating them does that not make them cannibals? Which is just what many early Christians were accused of.

Does anyone else see the hypocricy of the Roman Catholics here?
How many cultures has this institution brutalised? How many temples of so called 'pagan' gods has this institution demolished? The Roman Catholic Church's history is littered with murder, attempted genocide, child abuse, forced conversions, anti-semitism, and a whole range of other inhuman acts, and they freak out about a wafer! Even if it is symbolic of their failed messiah, so what? It doesn't change anything. Catholics have got a cheek anyway, they chop and change their beliefs every five minutes, next week the partaking of wafers could be done away with. Give the Vatican a few quid for the wafer, that will keep them happy, since the RCC is obsessed with money.

Be careful, Brian: the people complaining about the wafer are not the people who killed the pagans and the implemented the Inquisition and all that. Take our Catholic friends here: CS and Artemis. I'm sure neither of them has ever killed a pagan. Darwin loves you.

I'm sure neither of them has ever killed a pagan. They still choose to associate themselves with the institution that carried out these atrocites, fully sanctioned by many different Popes. They should just 'turn the other wafer' just like Jesus said they should do. Luke 6:27: "But I say to you who are listening: Love your enemies. Do good to those who hate you. I know RC's are not big on taking the Bible literally, but I think this verse is pretty unambiguous.

Hi, Brian.
Brian writes: They should just 'turn the other wafer' just like Jesus said they should do. Dude, that's awesome.
Brian writes: They still choose to associate themselves with the institution that carried out these atrocites, fully sanctioned by many different Popes. I think, we if dug deeply enough, we could think of something bad about every institution one of us is a part of, as well. For instance, I'm a Mormon, and you probably know all the bad things people associate with Mormons. You... well, your country invented bagpipes, so I don't think you have the right to complain about anybody's mistreatment of anybody else. Edited by Bluejay, : Apparently, some sentences need subjects. Darwin loves you.

You... well, your country invented bagpipes This is one of those common misconceptions, I think Turkey was the origin. Didn't notice you complaining about whisky.

Hi, Artemis.
Artemis Entreri writes: somehow laws against religion are fine, while laws against sexual preference are not? I don't think anybody here has supported or proposed an anti-religion law. So far, I've only seen arguments that say this was not a "hate crime" and that some religious folks are overreacted. Darwin loves you.

it was a hate crime. but this is a nation of protestants, by protestants, and for protestants. we are used to getting persecuted for our faith, by so called christians. we just like to bitch about it like everyone likes to bitch about everything else, and forum threads and blogs are a great spot for that.

Bluejay writes: I don't think anybody here has supported or proposed an anti-religion law. I think Art is talking about the succession to the monarchy in this country being denied to Catholics 308 years ago. Describing this as bigoted does assume that not wanting to be ruled from Rome is a form of bigotry, of course, because that was sort of the question at that time. It's also odd, as the Brits that he's currently arguing with are not Christians, let alone Protestants, and almost definitely not monarchists either. Mormons (as you know) and Jehovah's witnesses are probably the least popular forms of Christianity in the U.S., and Islam the least popular religion of all kinds. Even less popular than Islam, presumably because they have yet to kill anyone, come the modern scientific liberal non-religious humanists, P. Z. Myers being an example. Catholic extremists threatening people who have no respect for their superstitions deserve no sympathy, and normal Catholics should worry at how quickly the old style death threats emerge from their brethren. It's weird how ex-communication for death threats wouldn't happen, but the (Catholic) kid who kidnapped a wafer is supposed to be not only ex-communication material, but a threat to the world's most powerful organized religion who requires the bullying attention of the Catholic defense league. I'm glad I'm not religious, I really am.

I'd just like to point out that Deftil from Virginia is in no associated with Artemis from Virginia, and Artemis isn't representative of Virginians or most Americans either.
I think most of the people from across the pond are great. Edited by Deftil, : No reason given.
