Evolution is OK.
quote:
VATICAN CITY - The Vatican said on Tuesday the theory of evolution was compatible with the Bible but planned no posthumous apology to Charles Darwin for the cold reception it gave him 150 years ago.

Previous Popes
The Vatican said on Tuesday the theory of evolution was compatible with the Bible
But I was under the impresion that 'Darwinism' was a disproven fatally flawed theory soon to be doomed..........
Actually a few previous popes have made pronouncements generally accepting evolutionary theory. As long ago as 1950 according to the link.

Really?
The article writes:
"Maybe we should abandon the idea of issuing apologies as if history was a court eternally in session," [Archbishop Gianfranco Ravasi, the Vatican's culture minister] said, adding that Darwin's theories were "never condemned by the Catholic Church nor was his book ever banned."
I was just wondering if anyone actually still respected the Pope's "power".
Does anyone actually read this and say "oh, well, I suppose I should change my view on evolution, then"?
Does the Vatican really believe they hold some sort of jurisdiction over other people's thoughts? As if there's some auditorium crammed full of empty minds just waiting to hear what they should and should not believe in?
Nevermind... I don't like where this train of thought is leading. The answer's 'yes', isn't it? This is basically what all religions do, isn't it? That makes me sad.

Re: Really?
Well, if anything, it probably adds fuel to fundie protestants who have a problem with catholics. You know, if catholics accept it it has to be wrong.
Yes, the pope thinks he does have jurisdiction, and yes, people will change their minds based off of what the pope is saying.

I may. But it may also blunt a different arrow in their quiver. It gets harder and harder to maintain with a straight face that the ToE is inconsistent with the bible when the largest single christian denomination says it's not. And it becomes less and less likely that anyone who is not a brain-warped fundie will agree.

They always taught science in the Catholic schools that I attended, I dont want to say they taught evolution, because they taught us science and evolution is part of it, seperating the two doen't make alot of sense to me. I think it is odd they finally relsease something that they taught me in the 1980s, and most Catholics already knew about anyway. I guess they were tired of us being confused with the crazy Sola Scriptura crowd.

The MSNBC link seems to have expired, here's a link to the Reuters account:
Some close friends are Catholic, reject evolution, embrace Biblical literalism, and will in all likelihood continue.

Yes but any one with even a femtogram of common sense knows the fundies are wrong.
