I believe that much of learning is perceptual learning. That is, we learn by adapting our perceptual apparatus to better fit our world. An example of this is:

I see thinking as very much purpose driven, while dreaming probably isn't.
Here's my current tentative view on dreaming. I see the brain as a highly tuned system. But it won't stay highly tuned unless there is an effort to keep it that way. I suspect that REM sleep (the part of sleep where dreams occur) involves sending test signals to various parts of the brain in order to check how well they are aligned.
