You seem to see science fiction as fundies see prophecy, as a prediction of the future. A more accurate view, I think, is that both science fiction and prophecy are a reflection of
current society.
To answer the question, "What would Captain Kirk read?" he'd probably read about even more woo-woo technology used by people who still have the old primitive instincts to fight each other.
