Also be aware that where the brushes make contact with the rotor also wears thin, eventually the copper where the brushes make contact will wear out. I would look close before deciding on spending money on new brushes. If this is the case then you would have to move where the brush makes contact towards where the wires on the rotor attach, if there is room to do so.
Ah yes, this indeed is the case; there's no more copper left on the part of the shaft where the brushes make contact. It is looking like the money for the switch was not well-spent.
I'm going to have to get another vacuum.
Oh well, at least I know what is wrong now. Plus, I learned something new that I didn't know before!
