Well, I see your understanding of history is as deeply flawed as is your understanding of science. Nice to see a little consistency.

Ridicule is the only weapon which can be used against unintelligible propositions. -- Thomas Jefferson

We see monsters where science shows us windmills. -- Phat

It has always struck me as odd that fundies devote so much time and effort into trying to find a naturalistic explanation for their mythical flood, while looking for magical explanations for things that actually happened. -- Dr. Adequate

...creationists have a great way to detect fraud and it doesn't take 8 or 40 years or even a scientific degree to spot the fraud--'if it disagrees with the bible then it is wrong'.... -- archaeologist

First, who is "we"?

Are you old enough to have studied any US history yet?

You do know that the first European settlements in what is now the US were by Spanish Roman Catholics don't you?

You do know that the first English settlement in the US were strictly commercial and not affiliated or driven by any religion don't you?

You are aware of Henry's Church aren't you?

You do know that Christianity and the concept of a Religious State was the largest single problem faced in founding what became the US don't you?

You do know that absolutely none of that has anything to do with polygamy don't you?

Let's unpack what you just wrote a bit, Possessor.

When was the USA "one nation under God?" I think if you look at some history, you will find that the emphasis on that phrase began in 1954, when I was in the second grade in Sallisaw, Oklahoma. I had to relearn the Pledge of Allegiance because of commie-fearing politicians sliding it in. The laws against polygamy were passed nearly a century before that.

And where do you get the idea that Mormons have some god other than the one in the Old Testament, or the three in the New? Which "many gods" are we under now?

And what is "sin nature?" Does that term have a translation into non-fundy? I really would like to know.

Oh, and welcome to EvC!

 You didn't just say that, did you??
Catholics are pagans?!!!!? Surely you didn't mean to say this. Do you know what the word "pagan" means? See here; http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Paganism

Is this at all familiar to you?

quote:
We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father. Through him all things were made.

For us men and for our salvation he came down from heaven,
by the power of the Holy Spirit he was born of the Virgin Mary, and made man.

For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end.

We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of Life,
who proceeds from the Father and the Son.
With the Father and the Son he is worshipped and glorified.
He has spoken through the Prophets.

We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church.
We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins.
We look for the resurrection of the dead,
and the life of the world to come. Amen.

The Nicene Creed (as used currently every Mass at my local RC church), check out this page, http://en.wikipedia.org/...f_the_Nicene_Creed_in_current_use

Now how many pagan religions do you know of that use this as their basis of faith? I'm sorry, this may be at a tangent from the topic, but Possessor is basing his opinion of polygamy on complete ignorance of Christianity, evidenced by his statement that Catholicism is a pagan religion, unlike the Christianity of the good ol' US of A, "One Nation Under God (but only since 1954)" variety. A refutation of this ridiculous statement is on topic and very necessary.

That is one of the most honest, refreshing and pleasant replies I've ever seen on here. Thank you Possessor, there's nothing to forgive.

Re:  You didn't just say that, did you??
we all used to have the same views on religion

When was that? In the 1940's, when Jews couldn't buy houses in Christian neighborhoods? In the 1850's, when the Know-Nothings were a power in politics? Or back in the 1640's, when Virginia and Massachusetts banned Catholic immigrants? Or in 1200 BCE, when the Hebrews were allegedly slaughtering their neighbors for not following the correct god?

"The Christian church, in its attitude toward science, shows the mind of a more or less enlightened man of the Thirteenth Century. It no longer believes that the earth is flat, but it is still convinced that prayer can cure after medicine fails." H L Mencken

Re:  You didn't just say that, did you??
You seem to have an awful lot of beliefs that don't correspond with reality.

This forum is not a typical chat/discussion forum. You will find that many people here are highly educated and that our various fields of expertise are vast and overlapping. Most of them are probably science oriented, but not all by any stretch of the imagination. What's more, we're intensely, perhaps insanely, curious. We want to learn about the real world and we have spent substantial portions of our lifetimes studying.

It's not unusual for a new person to come here with a lot of misconceptions about science, history, religion, law, politics, whatever. Once in a while, such a person stays here long enough to learn that their misconceptions are wrong. More often than not, they leave when they find out that their thoughts are not only not going to simply be echoed by those of a like mind, but their thoughts are going to be challenged and attacked, and their misconceptions laid bare. Human nature being what it is, it's very difficult for someone to withstand repeated and fully supported assaults on their fundamental beliefs.

It's really up to you to decide what you want to do here. If you simply want to preach your brand of religion, there's a section here for that. But you will find that even there, people with vast amounts of knowledge will disagree with you and show you why they think you are wrong. If you want to learn, I would suggest that the best way to do that is to read and ask questions. But be prepared for answers that you don't want to hear.

Personally, I'd like to see you stay, if you're willing to listen to what others say and consider their arguments and the evidence they provide. It's quite fulfilling to see someone realize they've been lied to and learn the truth. Your willingness to acknowledge that you made a mistake suggests you might be willing to learn from others.

In any event, welcome to E v C, and happy debating!

Re:  You didn't just say that, did you??
Good apology.

But actually, there has never been a time when we all had the same views on religion and that is particularly true when speaking about the founding of the US and about Christianity.

In fact, it was the differing views on Christianity that almost doomed the establishment of the United States.

But again, that has absolutely nothing to do with polygamy.

I have all support that this was one nation under God. We came over to america so we could follow God,the only God,But know we are mostly pagan beliefs such as, mormon, catholic.evolution, and many more.we came over to america to excape catholisisem and the burden of the government.

Most of the Protestant settlers who emigrated for religious reasons were actually escaping from other Protestants who thought that they were the wrong kind of Protestant. Mennonites left Holland and Switzerland, Quakers and Puritans left England, and so forth.

I hope that it will encourage you to learn a little about history, particularly the US history as it relates to religions and Christianity because the reality is totally different than what is taught, especially what is taught in most modern Christian avoidance schools.
