Would a separate thread analysing the racism/mysogyny/whatever of the joke in question be appropriate? Or just overkill? For the record - I see this primarily as a "slutty mum" joke rather than explicitly racist. But context is everything....

For the record - I see this primarily as a "slutty mum" joke rather than explicitly racist. But context is everything.... Which also makes it extremely inappropriate for a sitting federal judge to forward a slutty mom joke about the President. I do not care who he sent it too. It shows an extreme lack of judgement. Something you do not want in someone in his position. His comments after he was caught also show he can not be expected to be impartial on cases that involve the Federal government and/or President Obama. Imagine the outrage if a "liberal" Judge had done this with something even less offense about GW. IOKIYAR

I agreed that it was a joke between friends, like he said. But the part of it NOT being racist is all me. Fine. I assume that your statement above means you are backing off of the comment below, given that the two statements are cannot be reconciled:

I'm still confused what there is to excuse? Whether or not you agree, I think it is pretty clear what people are finding objectionable. I don't believe anyone is truly as obtuse as your statement implies that you are.

If he'd made the same joke about you or me it wouldn't work because nobody knows who the hell we are. Judges are human. Even if that doesn't always make for politically correct jokes.

I see a bunch of folk getting there panties in a wad about a private conversation they were not even party to. Sorry but I happen to be in favor of folk having the right to tell racist, sexist, even just plain dumb jokes among themselves. If folk overhear the joke and get offended, then that is their problem. I hope being offended gives them some satisfaction.
Anyone so limited that they can only spell a word one way is severely handicapped!

Yeah, it is. If Obama was white would it make any sense? For the joke to make ANY sense the person asking the question needs to be half and half. Obama happens to be, so the joke fits. The joke would work with Lenny Kravitz, too. Although then it might be taken as anti-semetic as well, and you don't want to get those people started. If the mom would have been black and the kid appeared white in complection, I'm sure no one would have cared. Well, let me not say that. At that point the focus would have been on the promiscuity of the black mother and there would still have been complaints. But, since it was a white mom being described as a whore, no one cared, and instead the focus went BLINDLY to racism and completely bi-passed misogyny, until I pointed it out here. - Oni

Do we really need to care about jokes being sent between friends on a private e-mail? With REAL racism and REAL misogyny taking place daily, should this really be news? It's just drama.
Imagine the outrage if a "liberal" Judge had done this with something even less offense about GW.
