A Good Week For Loonies
Why You Should NEVER Re-Boil Water You know how you see the steam coming off of the water when you boil it? Well, that steam is made up of volatile compounds, and they burn out of the water, turn into gasses and leave the water as steam. When your boiled water cools down, those dissolved volatile gasses, as well as minerals, settle back into it. When you re-boil the water, the chemical compounds are changed again; however, the way they are changed is actually harmful. When water is re-boiled, dangerous components will collect in the water instead of escaping from it. What type of harmful substances? Usually re-boiled water contains: Arsenic
Nitrates
Fluoride

A man who didn't quite make the cut when he was just calling for the execution of gay people has now outdone himself and earned a coveted LOTW award.
There are families, we’re talking Christian families, pastors’ families, elders’ families from good, godly churches, he preached. Their sons are rebelling! Hanging out with homosexuals and getting married! And, he added, the parents are invited! The statement was met with a collective gasp of shock from the audience. What would you do if that was the case? Swanson continued. Here is what I would do: Sackcloth and ashes at the entrance to the church and I’d sit in cow manure and I’d spread it all over my body. That’s what I would do and I’m not kidding! I’m not laughing! I’m grieving! Swanson screamed, tears of rage running down his cheeks. I’m mourning! I’m pointing out the problem! It’s not a gay time, he continued. These are the people with the sores! The gaping sores! The sores that are pussy (sic) and gross and people are coming in and carving happy faces on the sores! That’s not a nice thing to do! Don’t you dare carve happy faces on open, pussy (sic) sores! I approve of one part of his plan, any time he wants to be covered in cow manure that's good with me.

Well, the dictionary says that sic is "used in brackets after a copied or quoted word that appears odd or erroneous to show that the word is quoted exactly as it stands in the original". Now, even leaving aside the fact that all Swanson's words appear odd and erroneous, I think it's fair to say that that one would, to most readers, appear particularly odd.

I am not sure what is right but it seems to me that, maybe, since "pus" has one "s" maybe purulent should be pusy with one "s". Really, purulent should be purulent. Pus has a classical root, after all: we don't go about saying tripody for tripedal or automatony for automatic or absorby for absorbent.

I'm actually fascinated to discover that American English distinguishes these two sounds - I never knew that. In British English they wouldn't be considered separate sounds. Not that we don't hear the difference, but which 'u' sound you use depends on where you grew up rather than which word you're trying to say. I'm fairly sure that whereas Northerners may conflate ʌ and ʊ into ʊ, no-one conflates them into ʌ.

A Kentucky woman was arrested on accusations she beat a disabled man with his metal cane until it broke, because he said he didn’t believe in God, WDRB reports. [...] The man was forced to crawl to a local gas station in order to seek help, where paramedics took him to a nearby hospital. He suffered serious injuries, including a concussion, a broken arm, multiple bruises, cuts and abrasions. He's probably a Christian now.

Marilyn Pauline Bodnar
Story here.
Police allege that when the baby developed a fever Bodnar told the mother to adopt a water only diet, telling her that her baby would not get better if she ate. When the child was six months old his mother asked Bodnar if she could feed him vegetable puree but the naturopath allegedly advised her to put raw food in a net and let the infant suck it. Bodnar is also accused of telling the mother to feed the child goat milk. When the child vomited it up Bodnar allegedly told the mother it was good because it eliminated the toxins that caused the eczema.
