I just got the new Joe Cocker album, The Ultimate Collection. from work at Universal and I had heard of him but never connected him with his songs. After listening to it I was like, Oh, I know that song. And that one. And that one. I realized I knew at least half the songs.
It’s a great collection of his hits from his 30+ year career. I know you all know these ones: With A Little Help From My Friends (the theme to Wonder Years), "You Are So Beautiful", "Up Where We Belong" from Officer and a Gentleman, "Unchain My Heart", "When The Night Comes" and First We Take Manhattan. I love that the CD features some great guests: Jimmy Page, Jimmy Cliff, Billy Preston, and Randy Newman.
I checked out this live footage and it is a must see. Very vintage.

The tune that I loved was the live cover of "The Letter", I belive written by Alex Chilton, and recorded by Chilton and the Box Tops.
A friend just got a Rhino 4 CD compilation (Don't recall exact title) of Punk Rock of the 70's (I guess includes proto-punk and new wave). A sampling of everthing except the Sex Pistols, who wouldn't licence any tunes. A truly tremendious package of mucic - much recommended.

Moosie,
My 17 yo daughter is a major early punk fan. It was music to my ears when I heard her say that "Good Charlotte isn't punk...it's junk" hehe . I'd really appreciate it if you could get the name of that collection for me.

Above cited page includes a tune/band listing for the thing.
A real arguement could be made, that a lot of it isn't punk - Still, a great collection.
