Vin, ol' buddy, ol' pal. Please, please stop trying to turn "Riddick" into a franchise. You can't get epic sci-fi out of the backstory to a crappy horror movie.
Just drop the Riddick stuff and do what I know you want to do - make a Dungeons and Dragons movie that doesn't suck. Go on, do it. You're the only one in Hollywoood that can. Snap up that Forgotten Realms franchise and make the movie, dammit!

Rotten Tomatoes: Movies | TV Shows | Movie Trailers | Reviews - Rotten Tomatoes is usually a great place to go to see a collection of reviews for the movies.
I like the director,Twohy (Pitch black was an ok rental, and Below was a good rental), but the reviews are sort of scarey. I've found if the tomato rating isn't at least 80%, it's a 50/50 the movie will be lame. Anything below 30% and the movie is guaranteed to suck. Of course Crash would disagree since he actually enjoyed Van Helsing. This message has been edited by custard, 06-29-2004 04:26 PM

Oh man! They couldn't even make the trailer look interesting!
Edited to add:Sorry. I just read custard's last post. I happened to see the trailer to Riddick when I saw Van Helsing. And, to be honest, I really enjoyed Van Helsing -- me and the guy I saw it with. So does that make me the sixth person in the entire world who liked that movie? This message has been edited by Chiroptera, 06-29-2004 04:33 PM

Oh man! They couldn't even make the trailer look interesting! from the trailer, i could go either stupid summer action flik, or good epic sci-fi. i heard they actually editted parts of it out because there was too much talking or something. but i thought the trailer looked interesting!

Maybe it's a generational thing, then? I was pretty disappointed when I went to the movies last. I usually enjoy the previews, but the only one that looked even mildly entertaining (to me) was the one for the sequal to The Bourne Identity. (Sigh)

(Sigh) that looked alright, but i think it's a "wait 'til video" one for me. the one that looked really interesting was the manchurian candidate remake. i am however appalled at i, robot.

Yeah, that's why I usually skim through the reviews and pick a few bad and a few good if I'm undecided.
From the content of the review, you can get an idea as to whether you'd agree to it or not. I wasn't going to see Spidey 2, but a lot of reviewers are saying its the best superhero movie ever, better than Batman. That might be a stretch since I don't think Raimi is as interesting visually as Tim Burton, but we'll see. If you liked pitch black though, I'd recommend Below. It's more of a thriller/horror, but it has the same dark look and feel. This message has been edited by custard, 06-29-2004 04:55 PM

I tend to avoid sequals unless I can be convinced there was a good reason to make beyond just milking the original idea as a cash cow.
My point was that I was seriously disappointed in that set of previews. I felt I was in the art-cinema house. I heard that they were remaking The Manchurian Candidate. With Vin Diesel as Riddick?

quote: This is one of my biggest complaints. They have a space ship in a horror film and they call it "sci-fi". I think science fiction should cut it's ties with horror once and for all. It's been a problem since Saturn 3.
quote: Fantasy in general is lacking, ignoring Lord of the Rings for the moment. I haven't seen a decent fantasy pic since The Neverending Story (don't laugh, I still like it).

Do you remember the last decent Will Smith movie? off the top of my head? "six degrees of seperation" checked that against imdb. apparently it's the ONLY decent movie he's ever been in. most people would cite his downfall at men in black, citing independence day as the last decent one... but... well, i thought that was a good movie when i was like 15. but that wasn't it, really. it's more that "bicentenial man" is more closely based on "i, robot" than "i, robot." this movie probably has asimov rolling in his grave, as it's completely against the entire spirit of his collection of stories.

ha ha yeah, 6 degrees probably was his only decent movie. He was adequate in Independence Day, but 6 degrees was probably the only time he's ever had to act - well he tried in Ali.
In a review of I, Robot I read that the script is actually based upon another story, but they threw the I, Robot title on there for name recognition - to appeal to sci fi fans. Thousands of killer robots doesn't seem much like the Asimov stories I read. More like Gremlins meets AI.
