I thought it was appropriate to start a thread in rememberance of the Tevatron, the last great scientific experiment constructed on US soil.

Teva, you will be missed.

Shutdown ceremony
As posted in the CERN neutrino thread:
From Fermilab Today, Friday, Sept 30, 2011:
The Tevatron shuts down today, after 28 years of operation.
Fermilab will shut down the Tevatron this afternoon for the last time. A broadcast of the event will begin at 2 p.m. CDT. Fermilab staff and users can watch the broadcast in Ramsey Auditorium. The broadcast will also be available online.
Fermilab Director Pier Oddone will host the broadcast, which will feature the shutdown in the Main Control Room, and the CDF and DZero control rooms.
The event will be streamed online beginning at 1:45 PM CDT.

WTB more SCIENCE!
Here's hoping the US is able/willing to undertake more advanced research like the Tevatron in the future. I'm not particularly hopeful in the current economic/political climate, but I can dream. I hear the employees/research participants over at Aperture Labs get cake! And are not at all in any way incinerated.
FOR SCIENCE!

Well, at least we have the dream. When the plans for the SSC fell through after it was called "wasteful spending" my dreams died a little bit. The SSC was going to have 20 TeV per beam. How awesome would that have been?
It seems that American science has moved away from the big experiments. Hell, we have to hitch a ride with the Russians if we want to go to the International Space Station. It is sad to see both the Tevatron and the Space Shuttle shut down in the same year.
