So, I was sitting around last night and was thinking about which pop culture icons from 1940-present can be seen as similar to mythological or religious figures. I figured it may be a fun little aside from serious discussion to see what indivduals think of my ideas (only a few so far, trying to think of more) and also if anyone else has any they can come up with.
For this game, I feel that not only should the person make a suggestion, but also, please explain why you feel that the Pop Culture icon in question has the required traits and qualities in common with the mythos.
So, without further ado, here are the couple I have come up with so far. Please inform me if there is any reasoning that does not make sense. I will start it with the big one:
Jesus H. Christ = John Lennon:
While John Winston Ono Lennon was a huge success in the music industry, he was also a major actor in the movement promoting peace throughout the world. He believed strongly in loving one another and argues this point endlessly, especially after the dissolution of The Beatles. John could have angry moments, similar to the one discussed in the NT about Jesus clearing the people from the temple, but his primary concern was his fellow human beings. Finally, at the age of 40 (slightly older than Jesus' 33) this prophet of peace was assassinated by a crazed man who felt he was a phony.
Next, we have Mars: God of War
Mars: God of War = General George S. Patton:
Mars, as the god of war, was an individual who was seen to be ferocious in battle. With Athena as the goddess of military strategy, this left Mars to be the Bloodthirsty warrior, intent on the decimation of his enemies in battle. Likewise, Patton, while definitely a military genius, was not the number one strategist of World War II. Rather he was second in this regard to Dwight D. Eisenhower. However, Patton was content to take the divisions he commanded directly into the enemy, driving them before him. Patton also believed that a leader should lead from the front, making him a physical combatant in war, similar to Mars in mythology. He believed in rapid and aggressive offensives, constantly battering the enemy into submission.
And the last one I shall include in this OP is a little more out there and is far more personal preference, so there may be some dissenting opinions on this one.
Moses = Mel Brooks:
Moses - Ten Commandments: History of the World: Part 1
As I see it, I simply feel like Moses would have been a little sarcastic with God after all the work he was being asked to put in. For this reason, I see Mel Brooks, with his extreme wit and Jewish sarcasm as a perfect fit for the one person who must speak with God regularly and obey his bidding. It would grate on anyone's nerves slightly to constantly be told go do this, go do that, while not being able to completely understand God's intentions during the situation. Therefore, I cast Mel Brooks as Moses, mostly due to my own desire to imagine that Jewish sarcasm has been a staple of human culture for over 3,000 years.
Okay, so those are a few I have come up with. I will keep trying to think of more and if anyone would like to post some that they can think of, please do. Also, if someone feels they have an individual who better represents one of the three I have already done, please do not hesitate to post that. I may be wrong on the best pop culture representation after all...

The theory of evolution by cumulative natural selection is the only theory we know of that is in principle capable of explaining the existence of organized complexity. - Richard Dawkins
Creationists make it sound as though a 'theory' is something you dreamt up after being drunk all night. - Issac Asimov
If you removed all the arteries, veins, & capillaries from a person’s body, and tied them end-to-endthe person will die. - Neil Degrasse Tyson
What would Buddha do? Nothing! What does the Buddhist terrorist do? Goes into the middle of the street, takes the gas, *pfft*, Self-Barbecue. The Christian and the Muslim on either side are yelling, "What the Fuck are you doing?" The Buddhist says, "Making you deal with your shit. - Robin Williams
