in case you don't frequent the other side on internet waste, there's a big charity event going on. average people will be blogging for 24 hours straight (in 30 minute increments) to raise money for their chosen charity. the secret is.... they need sponsors.
http://www.blogathon.org will tell you all about how it works and help you search for someone to sponsor. there are people supporting diabetes research, pet welfare, pagan pride, amnesty international, and national right to life among myriad others. you're bound to find something you want to support. and if you can't, i'm on there. my charity is Aegis Trust, an international organization dedicated to preventing and recovering from genocide. i will be posting all day tomorrow about said topic in an effort to educate others in not only historical, political, and legal contexts; but also about organizations and their efforts and how you, yes you, can prevent genocide with ordinary activities. if you're not able to support, but you'd still like to read, feel free to hunt me down. i've moved on. LiveJournal
also, i apologize to mod for the impending flooding of your friends page.
here's a little more info about my efforts.
Name: brennakimi
Blogathon blog: the best imitation of myself
Blogging for: Aegist Trust
The Aegis Trust campaigns to prevent genocide worldwide.
Aegis was founded in 2000 and has its home at the first Holocaust Centre in the UK, which opened in 1995. Since 2002 Aegis has had an office in Kigali, Rwanda, and we were responsible for establishing the Kigali Memorial Centre in cooperation with the Kigali City Council.
Aegis activities include: research, policy, education, remembrance, awareness of genocide issues in the media and humanitarian support for victims of genocide.
Aegis is motivated by those who have experienced genocide. Their stories are at the heart of the organisation.
Aegis means 'Shield' or 'Protection' in Greek because vulnerable people need protection against genocide. Aegis believes that no-one, whoever they are, should face discrimination, even death, as a result of their ethnic origin or beliefs.
About me: I'm a graduate student between programs and an aspiring genocide scholar. I'm almost married and I have four cats. I like cheese and reading and posting about any number of subjects that I find interesting. My journal (which is mostly friends only, due to privacy and intellectual property concerns) is filled with information on math, science, politics, and genocide; cartoons i find online, and personal rambling. My title is taken from a song by Ben Folds Five.
Why I chose my charity: As I said, I'm an aspiring genocide scholar and I am quite committed to the issue. Until I met my fiance, I could claim that I had never been touched by this phenomenon, but two of his great-grandfathers were killed in concentration camps in Poland--just for being Polish. But my lack of personal experience in no way diminishes my desire to study, understand, and end this blight on humanity.
My plans for blogathon: I will utilize my posts during this period to educate readers on genocide in a historical, political, and legal context. I will also discuss various organizations related to genocide and what they are doing to prevent genocide or heal peoples who have suffered, and what readers can do to help.
Please Sponsor Me!
also, if a particular moderator sponsors me, i'll post the whole blogathon and my impending bible study series of threads here with proper capitalization.
