Bacteria that eats oil!
I find this phenomenon quite interesting. I present the matter for discussion, and the article as a basis, regarding exactly where this ability -- i.e. being able to metabolise oil -- something we have not seen before in the natural world -- came from.
Thema prima: Was it evolution, through a random mutation that occurred in a species/population/grouping thing at the right time to enable oil metabolism? Or was it General Overseer Dude upstairs, providing the earth with a way to defend itself from meddling humankind?
Thema secunda: I would like to also draw parallels with the "nylon-eating bacteria". This may lead to further discussion of what impact, if any, the discovery has on both the state of current knowledge with regards to evolution, and moreover on the claims of creationists that new alleles or "information" cannot arise and that evolution has never been observed.
This may be best suited to the Miscellaneous Evo/Creo forum.
{OTDabe: not a COSCist, me. I'll take that as a 'no' then.}
{OTDabe: Thanks. nwr explained it via PM too.}
